Greetings from Washington, where this month the IndyCar race came to town – another grand spectacle organised by US President Donald Trump as part of the celebrations marking 250 years of American independence. The route taken by America’s version of Formula 1 ran past historic buildings, monuments, museums and federal agencies. Downtown was encircled by concrete barriers, fences and military vehicles, with a heavy presence of National Guard troops and police. Constant disruption has become something of a trademark of Trump 2.0. And for some Washington residents, the spectacle brought to mind an old phrase: Let them eat cake.
