If script leaks are consistent with the final product, those buying a ticket will find themselves with a fresh, grounded take on Capcom's world of the reanimated undead when compared to the Milla Jovovich-led films or the fan-service-heavy animated movies. In the last look at the film we got, they noticed that the gun store, which should be familiar to those who played the original Resident Evil 2, is under new management. Kennedy is arming the people of Raccoon City, as we can spot his name on a storefront. Whether this means that he'll be in the movie has yet to be confirmed in any pre-release materials or official casting details, so this could just be an easter egg. Other than the Umbrella Corporation, nothing suggests the movie exists in a way that significantly ties in with the games' universe. That would certainly be a weird stretch if it was anything more than the equivalent of a background gag. Speaking of gags, the movie was apparently much more comedic in tone than expected. That's because a lot of the influence in the original game's stories is taken from low-budget American action and horror films. The tone of the fan-favorite Resident Evil 4 leaned towards tongue-in-cheek in both its original iteration and remake.
