Legendary 90s ‘Champion Beer of Britain’ makes a massive comeback to pubs next month – do you remember drinking it?

A BELOVED beer that was crowned Champion Beer of Britain back in 1993 is making a triumphant return to pubs across the country next month. Adnams is bringing back Extra, its hoppy Extra Special Bitter, as an autumnal seasonal ale ahead of Cask Ale Week. The historic brew, famous for its intense English hop character and thirst-quenching finish, will be available on draught once again from September 17 to September 27. For the first time in its history, drinkers will also be able to enjoy Extra at home, with the beer being canned for the very first time. Sign up for the Money newsletter Thank you! Extra won its Champion Beer of Britain crown at the 1993 Great British Beer Festival thanks to its heavy use of English Fuggle hops. It also made a limited comeback appearance for the very first Cask Ale Week in the early noughties, before disappearing from pumps for years. Head brewer Dan Gooderham said: “The essence of Extra all those years back was its resinous quality. It was vibrant and punchy, with a whole basket of interesting aromatics that came exclusively from the Fuggle hop.” He added: “It has a gloriously hoppy, floral, and herbal aroma which follows through on the palate, where it is balanced by the biscuity fullness of the malts.” Mr Gooderham said the growing appetite for heritage beers convinced the brewery to bring it back this year. He said: “With growing interest in heritage brews, we were excited to brew it again for our 2026 seasonal calendar.” Most read in Money He continued: “As well as heading back to the pumps, it will also be packaged for enjoying at home, for the first time in its history.” Cask Ale Week is an annual celebration of Britain’s national drink and the pubs where it is enjoyed. Adnams Extra will be pulled on cask in pubs this autumn, while a limited run of 440ml cans will go on sale in Adnams shops and online from September 1. Comment now
