EXCLUSIVE: Michaël R. Roskam‘s ensemble World War Two Belgian resistance drama Le Faux Soir world premieres as a Special Presentation in Toronto this weekend, before heading to San Sebastian as the closing film, and Deadline can unveil the trailer. Set in Belgium in November 1943, the drama is inspired by the events surrounding daily newspaper Le Soir, which became a vehicle for Nazi Germany propaganda following its invasion of the country in 1940, resulting in it being nicknamed “Le Soir Volé” (The Stolen Soir). In the world’s “first media hack”, a group of Resistance fighters hatch a wild but dangerous plan to print a fake edition of Le Soir, packed with articles mocking the occupier. Arieh Worthalter (The Goldman Case) leads a cast also featuring Mélanie Thierry (Da 5 Bloods, Memoir of War), Karim Leklou (Beating Hearts, Jim’s Story), Mara Taquin (The Mohicans, On the Edge), Bouli Lanners (Nobody Has to Know, The Night of the 12th), Julien Frison (The Night of the 12th) and François Damiens (Dog on Trial, La Famille Belier). Watch on Deadline The production marks Roskam’s first feature film since Racer and the Bird, which played as a Special Presentation in Toronto in 2017, with credits in between including Apple+ drama Golden Globe-nominated Black Bird, with Taron Egerton, Paul Walter Hauser and Greg Kinnear. Le Faux Soir is produced by Jean-Yves Roubin and Cassandre Warnauts at Belgium’s Frakas Productions; Alice Girard and Vincent Maraval at French production combo Goodfellas/Rectangle Productions; and Roskam’s Harbor Men Pictures; in association with Anonymous Federation et Rossel (Bernard Marchant). Cinéart has taken Benelux rights. Goodfellas is handling international sales.
