Recently, we've been more used to seeing brands exit markets than join them, so it’s great to see a new player launch its first phone in the UK. Indian brand Lava has launched the Agni 4N, and it’s directly targeting affordable phones from Samsung, Nothing, and Xiaomi. Who is Lava? A well-established brand Lava International has been around since 2009, and is a homegrown Indian brand, making it unusual even in India. Ahead of the launch, Android Police spoke to Devneet Bohidar, Lava’s Head of Product, about the company’s plan. Our philosophy as a brand is to attract people who are tech-aware, who understand it beyond just the names and the brands. The Agni 4N brings good value in terms of hardware and software. If we’re able to establish our credibility and build trust in the UK, I think it will give us confidence to expand to other markets. Bohidar said he saw the UK as an entry point, underlining the company’s global ambitions. Lava will market and sell the Agni 4N online, and is concentrating on building awareness of the brand. It considers the product itself as the ‘secret sauce,’ rather than overspending on flashy marketing. While Lava is well-established as a company in India, it has faced enormous pressure from other brands. In its recent report on the Indian market, Counterpoint Research showed Lava wasn’t in the top five brands for shipments, and didn’t provide a market share figure at all. Instead, India is dominated by Vivo, Oppo, Samsung, Xiaomi, and Realme. However, in a 2025 report about Lava’s intention to launch in the UK, it’s noted the brand has seen success in other markets adjacent to India, and has enjoyed considerable growth in low-cost devices too. Lava also has a strong hold on the feature phone market in India, with a 29% share according to the company. What about the Agni 4N? Solid mid-range phone Now we’ve talked about the business side, what about the phone? Lava needs to make a very strong first impression if it’s going to have any impact in the UK, where most of the same brands it faces in India are also highly active, along with even greater competition from Apple, Google, and brands like Nothing. The Lava Agni 4N has a 6.67-inch AMOLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate, and is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 8350 processor. The 4nm chip has 8GB of RAM and challenges the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 and the Samsung Exynos 1680. On the back is a simple 50-megapixel main camera and 8MP wide-angle camera set up, but the 50MP selfie camera is unusual. A 5,000mAh battery with 66W wired fast charging delivers the energy, Android 16 is installed with a new Lava UI, and other features include an in-display fingerprint sensor, various AI features, a physical button to activate Google Gemini or another feature, plus stereo speakers. The Agni 4N has an aluminum frame. Regarding software updates, two Android OS updates and three years of security updates are promised. Lava will also allow owners to track software update schedules online. How much will the Agni 4N cost? What about the competition? There is only one version of the Agni 4N. It has 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage space, and it costs £499. This converts to around $677. It will come in two colors, Phantom Black and Lunar Mist, and it’ll be available on Amazon from September 4. The phone has a two-year warranty, and there’s a UK telephone support center too. While reasonable, the Agni 4N’s price puts it in a very tough space. It’ll have to pull buyers away from the Samsung Galaxy A57, Google Pixel 10a, Nothing Phone 4a Pro, Apple iPhone SE3, and Xiaomi 17T, plus deals on phones like the Motorola Edge 70 and the Honor 600. Worth a closer look? It’s early days, but a welcome launch Lava isn’t going to be a familiar brand name to the majority of smartphone fans in the UK, but Amazon is a good place for the brand to launch, and the Agni 4N’s price will help it attract value-conscious buyers. However, competition is so strong, and the Agni 4N’s spec isn’t anything special. Lava will point to AI as a selling point, but Nothing has great AI features regular people may actually want to use, and Samsung is bringing many of its more useful Galaxy AI features to phones like the A57 and the Galaxy S26 FE. However, the design looks like a winner. There's a hint of Google's Pixel visual identity, which is no bad thing, but it's the mature style that makes it desirable. It's fantastic to see a new brand launch in the UK, and the tentative start shows it doesn’t intend to blow its budget in a month, which indicates it’s here to stay for a while. Android Police will bring you more on the Lava Agni 4N when the phone arrives for review.
