Lauren Laverne opens up on ‘tricky times’ amid rare blood & bone marrow disorder diagnosis – 2 years after cancer battle

THE ONE Show’s Lauren Laverne has opened up on the ‘tricky times’ she faced over the last few years after a number of health battles. The TV and radio host, 48, revealed earlier this month that she’s been diagnosed with a rare blood and bone disorder, two years after being given the all-clear from cancer. And so I’ve spent more and more and more time outside. Sign up for the Showbiz newsletter Thank you! “I mean, so in, oh God, the past eight years. So, you know, lost my mam and dad, they both died. And then, you know, I got cancer and been through lots of different health challenges with like recovery and things like that. It’s been really important to have the garden, I’ve spent more and more time out there.” The Desert Island Discs host added that during the height of her cancer battle she was “in hospital for a month” and was yearning to be out in nature. Lauren is known for presenting The One Show and Desert Island Discs on BBC Radio 4 Credit: BBC Prior to her current health battle, Lauren was diagnosed with cancer but was given the all-clear in November 2024 Credit: PA “I think when I got home I just wanted to be outside, and also like say if you’re going through something really difficult, maybe you’ve had adiagnosis or, you know, you’ve lost someone or something like that and then you go to a party, you feel like you’re really out of place. “Or if you go to work, like, you’re kind of on a different time zone to everybody there so you sort of feel like you don’t fit, but the funny thing about being outdoors you can feel however you want to feel and it’s alright.” In mid-July, Lauren took to Instagram to share the heartbreaking news with fans that she had been diagnosed with smouldering myeloma. According to Myeloma UK’s website, smouldering myeloma is: “An early form of the blood cancer myeloma. Most read in Showbiz “In smouldering myeloma abnormal cells can be detected in the bone marrow, and abnormal protein can be detected in the blood and/or urine.” In her video address, Lauren said: “I’m quite a private person by nature but am sharing this as one of the many things I’ve learned after going through health challenges in recent years is that talking about this stuff helps people.” The BBC radio star added that her new diagnosis was in no way related to her previous illness or recent surgery but was “just one of those things”. In August 2024, the TV presenter announced she had been diagnosed with cancer but did not reveal what type of cancer she had. At the time she explained the cancer had been caught early and she was expected to make a “full recovery”.
