Last chance for Iran: Trump says talks to sign peace deal going on right now

Donald Trump insisted that discussions with Iran were already in progress and Gulf allies were supporting the effort to secure an agreement.Iran sees the current lull as conditional rather than permanent. (File Photo)Hours after lashing out at "duplicitous" Iran's leadership over negotiations, US President Donald Trump on Monday claimed talks with Tehran were going on "right now" and warned that it was the country's last chance to sign a deal. He said the negotiations were taking place at Iran's request and were backed by Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, despite Tehran's repeated insistence that no direct talks with Washington are under way.Speaking to reporters, Trump insisted that discussions with Iran were already in progress and said regional allies were supporting the effort to secure an agreement."We are talking right now (with Iran) at the request of Iran, backed by Saudi Arabia, backed by the UAE, and backed by Qatar in particular, but others also. Many countries called but if it doesn't happen, this is the last chance for them to sign a good document," Trump said.Trump did not specify where the talks were taking place or identify the officials involved. His comments marked another twist in the conflicting narratives surrounding US-Iran talks. Earlier in the day, he had accused Iranian officials of publicly denying negotiations while privately seeking meetings with the US. Earlier on Monday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said there were no talks with the US and no meetings planned in the coming days. He said the only ongoing discussions involved Oman and were limited to the management of the Strait of Hormuz.A senior Iranian source also told Reuters that no talks had been scheduled and that Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, who is currently on a religious pilgrimage in Iraq, would not be available for negotiations until at least the end of the week. In response to Iran's denial, Trump accused Iran's leadership of publicly rejecting negotiations while secretly pursuing them. In a Truth Social post, he called Iranian leaders "unbelievably duplicitous" and alleged they had asked for meetings while insisting publicly that they were only dealing with Oman.He also warned that nothing would pass through Iran unless Tehran agreed to "a Deal, or Total Surrender," and reiterated that Iran would never be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon.- EndsPublished By: Satyam SinghPublished On: Aug 3, 2026 23:51 IST
