This article contains SPOILERS for Lanterns season 1, episode 7.As the finale of Lanterns season 1 fast approaches, the future of the DCU show and of Aaron Pierre's John Stewart is at the top of many viewers' minds. Though the season isn't over yet, fans of James Gunn's DCU are already looking forward to Lanterns season 2. After all, the show has garnered huge viewership numbers, critics gave Lanterns great reviews, and the series introduced fan-favorite characters John Stewart and Hal Jordan to the DCU. Lanterns season 1 is also heading towards a massive finale that should continue to draw fan attention. John Stewart and the Halogram found Sinestro stranded on Antaan's home world in Lanterns episode 7, and episode 8 promises long-awaited answers about the Manhunters and other secrets gripping Rushville, Nebraska. While we don't yet know how Lanterns season 1 will end, we do have a bit of insight about Lanterns season 2. Lanterns Season 2 Is Not Confirmed Despite the breakout success of the show, HBO and Warner Bros. have not confirmed Lanterns season 2 yet. There are, however, a few encouraging reports surrounding the show. The writers' room for Lanterns reportedly reconvened in July and is actively submitting pitches to HBO for season 2, for example. On top of that, Lanterns has broken viewership records for HBO Max and secured rave reviews from critics, making it exactly the type of success story that streaming services typically want to renew. However, HBO and Warner Bros. likely won't issue an official decision about Lanterns season 2 until after the ending of the first season. The creators of Lanterns will need a solid pitch and outline for the season before they can move forward, and everything will have to be coordinated with the DCU's immediate plans for upcoming movies and shows. Warner Bros. is also going through quite a bit of behind-the-scenes drama that could push a Lanterns season 2 renewal even further back. Warner Bros. is in the middle of a hostile takeover by Paramount, which is almost sure to complicate series renewals and production timelines. Even if Paramount's parent company, Skydance Entertainment, decides to go forward with Lanterns season 2, they'll likely take some time to examine Warner Bros. financials before officially announcing it. The future of Lanterns season 2 is currently uncertain but hopeful. John Stewart Will Officially Return In James Gunn's DCU Image via MovieStillsDB Regardless of whether Lanterns season 2 happens or not, John Stewart's future with the DCU is already officially safe. Aaron Pierre confirmed that John Stewart will appear in Man of Tomorrow, the sequel to 2025's Superman. The Man of Tomorrow movie will reportedly focus on classic DC villain Brainiac as its main villain, who will be a big enough threat to force Superman and Lex Luthor to join forces alongside several other heroes, like Green Lantern. Man of Tomorrow is set to premiere in theaters on July 9, 2027. John Stewart's inclusion in Man of Tomorrow is also a great sign for his longevity in the DCU at large. While a handful of heroes appeared in Superman, Man of Tomorrow is shaping up to be the DCU's first proper team-up film. There are even rumors that other members of the Justice League, like Wonder Woman, could appear in Man of Tomorrow. If that proves true, Man of Tomorrow could be the project James Gunn uses to properly establish the Justice League; John Stewart being part of it would then mean he's a founding member. While Lanterns season 1 isn't over yet, John's inclusion in Man of Tomorrow also makes it safe to assume that he's going to become a main Green Lantern by the time of the film, at least. Guy Gardner and Hal Jordan's roles are still up in the air, but at this point, it looks like John Stewart at least is going to be a mainstay of the DCU. Even if Lanterns season 2 doesn't happen, he'll likely show up in other crossover movies and shows, and there could even be a standalone Green Lantern movie. Unfortunately, John Stewart's future with the DCU also complicates Lanterns season 2's chances of being renewed. With John set to become a mainline member of the DCU's Justice League, James Gunn and the other creatives at DC may decide to save him for larger projects like movies instead of a streaming show. Aaron Pierre's filming schedule may also become an issue that would preclude him from the massively long filming schedule tied to a television show. Lanterns Season 2 Cast Photograph by John Johnson/HBO Max If Lanterns season 2 does get officially renewed by HBO and Warner Bros., there are already some aspects about the new season that we can predict. For instance, there are a few likely candidates for a potential Lanterns season 2. A lot of the cast of season 2 does, however, depend upon the ending of season 1. A lot could happen in that finale, and character deaths (and a potential resurrection) could drastically change season 2's cast. Lanterns season 2's cast does have a couple of safe bets, however. John Stewart will almost certainly return, seeing as he's prepared to become the DCU's main Green Lantern. Similarly, Guy Gardner and Laura Linney's Guardian of Oa will presumably return. It's possible that Kyle Chandler's Hal Jordan could come back, either as the Halogram or if Hal is revived by the Manhunter's technology. Lastly, since Sinestro hasn't found the Yellow Lanterns yet, he'll likely return again in season 2. It's also safe to assume that the vast majority of the supporting cast of Lanterns season 1 won't return for season 2. While the show may return to Rushville, Nebraska, it seems far more likely that residents of the town, like Billy Macon, won't be returning. Characters who have already met their demise, like Zoe, Antaan, and Will Macon, obviously will not be able to reprise their roles. In all likelihood, Lanterns season 2 will introduce a new supporting cast as John investigates another mystery in a new location. Lanterns Season 2 Story Perhaps the least predictable aspect of Lanterns season 2 is its story, given the many plot twists and red herrings in the first season alone. While it is impossible to predict with much accuracy what kinds of twists and turns Lanterns season 2 might have, the broad strokes of the story may have already been set up in season 1. Sinestro's presence alone is a big clue, though there's still no guarantee that the show will follow established comics. In the Green Lantern comics, Sinestro eventually discovers the Yellow Lanterns and establishes his Sinestro Corps, a classic enemy of the Green Lanterns that are fueled by fear instead of willpower. Since Sinestro clearly doesn't have a Yellow Lantern ring in Lanterns season 1, it's entirely possible that Lanterns season 2 could be about him discovering the Yellow Lanterns and forging an alliance with Parallax, the fear entity of the DC Universe. There's no telling where Lanterns season 2 could take the story of Sinestro, Parallax, and the Yellow Lanterns, but the comics could offer some inspiration. Hal Jordan was famously overcome by fear and Parallax's influence in the comics, and given his portrayal so far in Lanterns season 1, it's not far-fetched to assume the show could be building to that same storyline. There will obviously be surprises and twists aplenty, but if HBO and Warner Bros. decide to continue Lanterns for a second season, they've got plenty of Green Lantern stories left to tell.
