Sign in to your ScreenRant account DC Comics icon and the writer behind Batman, Superman, and Green Lantern, Grant Morrison, has finally revealed how he truly feels about HBO's adaptation of the legendary franchise, Lanterns. The eight-episode adaptation concluded on October 4, 2026, with "Dirt and Stars." Starring Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, the superhero drama focused on a murder investigation involving the intergalactic peacekeeping organization, the Green Lantern Corps. Although the final episode resolved the mystery surrounding Jordan's death, several decisions made by its surviving characters have become points of contention for Morrison. HBO's Lanterns has triggered plenty of discussions following its season 1 finale. However, one prominent DC Comics writer has raised serious concerns about how the show handled its biggest revelations. Morrison, whose years of work for DC include one of the most popular runs of Green Lantern, has criticized how the network concluded Lanterns season 1, questioning whether it undermines the values of the Green Lantern Corps. In the last episode of Lanterns season 1, Jordan was killed by Sheriff Kerry Kane (Kelly Macdonald) after he discovered that her son Noah (Shea Pritchard) was a Manhunter. Morrison addressed his problems with the finale on October 10, 2026, with a post on his Substack. While the author acknowledged the series' strengths, he also argued that its ending failed to adequately address the consequences of the characters' actions and underplayed the severity of the situation. Morrison was upset that HBO decided not to pursue any criminal charges against Kerry. He also took issue with Stewart, ultimately allowing her to remain free instead of making her face the consequences of her actions. The latter was one of Morrison's biggest objections about the finale of Lanterns. Morrison explained how he found it hard to believe that an organization that was supposed to enforce laws across the universe could overlook the murder of one of its own people. The comic book writer added that the absence of any sort of meaningful punishment for the crime disgraced the Green Lantern Corps. His criticism extended beyond Kerry's involvement in Hal's death. Morrison also objected to John's decision to spare Noah, despite the potential danger associated with his Manhunter origins. Within the show's storyline, Manhunters are connected to the Guardians of the Universe and have dangerous abilities that could destroy the world. Although Noah has shown that he can make his own decisions based on morals, his survival and freedom remain a major threat. All eight episodes of Lanterns season 1 can currently be streamed on HBO Max.
