LaNorris Sellers assisted off field following hard hit, opponent falling on his ankle

South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers was assisted off the field in a game against Texas A&M after he was hit hard and fumbled late in the first half. He appeared to get landed on awkwardly following the hit. Sellers was hit by one defender and coughed up the ball. Moments later he was contacted by another. As he went down, his left ankle appeared to get trapped underneath one of the defenders and twisted. He quickly headed into the team’s medical tent, and he left the game and did not return in the first half. He went to the locker room early for X-rays. The results of those X-rays were revealed by the broadcast crew just before the second half began. “After that sack fumble in the first half when he was rolled up on, that left ankle, I just got word from Shane Beamer a moment ago, LaNorris Sellers is going to try to give it a go,” sideline reporter Stormy Buonantony said. “The X-rays on that ankle were negative. But I’ll tell you watching him in warmups a moment ago he was visibly uncomfortable trying to step into that throw. The warmup throws did not look good. He numerous times pushed over, had his, kind of stomped out his feet, looked very uncomfortable, guys.” Initially, Sellers exited the game and headed to the locker room. Things didn’t look particularly good, and there was concern that he might be out for the game when the injury first unfolded live. “Yeah, moments ago he just walked out of the medical tent here without his cleat on,” Buonantony said in the first half. “The athletic trainer handed him his cleat back and it looks like they are walking over to the locker room as we speak, guys. Terrible news for LaNorris Sellers.” Sellers did not return in the first half. At halftime, Buonantony asked head coach Shane Beamer about the status of his star quarterback and whether he might be able to return in the second half. “We’re concerned. He’s got an ankle right now,” Beamer said. “They’re taking an X-ray on it, I don’t know the results of that right now.” Sellers has been instrumental in the team’s success, which has included recent wins over ranked Florida and Tennessee squads. At 5-3 on the season, the Gamecocks checked in at No. 21 in the first College Football Playoff rankings this week, still clinging onto hopes of a postseason berth. Of course, should LaNorris Sellers prove to be out for any extended period, that might become much more difficult. He’s been the team’s regular starter on offense for multiple years now. Going into Saturday’s contest against Texas A&M, Sellers had thrown for 1,849 yards and 16 touchdowns, against seven interceptions. He had also run for a team-leading 603 yards and six scores. Beamer spoke to what the team might have to do if he can’t return, with South Carolina leading 7-6 at the break. “We’ve got a lot of confidence in Cutter Woods, he’s our backup,” Beamer said. “Total confidence in him. The bigger issue right now is we’re getting our butts kicked on the line of scrimmage. We’re not running the ball and they’re running the ball down our throats right now.” In his career, which dates back to the start of the 2023 season, LaNorris Sellers has amassed 6,906 passing yards, 49 touchdowns and 22 interceptions. He has also run for 1,598 yards and 19 touchdowns.
