It cost the Aussie victory at the Hungaroring with him making his second pit-stop just five laps before and looking nailed on for the win. He said on the team radio: “Is he f***ing stupid or what? Get out of the f***ing way, you idiot! Oh my god.” Sainz was slapped with a five-second penalty but it meant little for Piastri as Norris pitted one lap later and reemerged just in front of his teammate before cruising to victory. It was reigning world champion Norris and McLaren’s first win of the season. To make matters worse, Piastri ground to a halt on track on lap 56 with technical failure and was left out of the race as the Virtual Safety Car came out. But the Brit was told to give the place back as Ferrari agreed Antonelli had been ahead at the crucial Safety Car 2 line. Hamilton’s headache continued as he was then noted by the stewards for speeding in the pit lane. Verstappen, who gambled in not stopping under the VSC, was nailed on for second while Norris cruised ahead despite a track limits warning. Dutchman Verstappen said: “How the f*** we got second today is unbelievable. Great result. Was struggling quite a lot out there.” Norris had started on pole and initially got away well, but ran wide in the first few corners, allowing Piastri to take the lead. It was a disastrous start for Charles Leclerc, who dropped from second to fifth, with Verstappen and Hamilton flying past him. Russell spared a few blushes by finishing the race in seventh after plummeting to 18th at the start after his car went into anti-stall mode. 1 comment1
