Land cave-in along national highway near Mukkali in Keralam’s Kozhikode sparks concern

A portion of land near Mukkali on the National Highway in Kozhikode caved in on Monday (September 21, 2026), raising concern among residents and leaving two nearby houses in a precarious position.The cave-in occurred around noon at a site where excavation was under way for the foundation of a protective wall. The construction of the wall had been expedited after two similar incidents were reported in the area earlier this year.The ground gave way while workers engaged in the construction were away for lunch, averting what could have been a major mishap. Several workers are involved in the construction of the protective wall at the site.The latest incident has raised fresh concerns about the stability of the land adjoining the highway. Two houses now remain vulnerable, with residents fearing that a further cave-in could damage or destroy the structures.Meanwhile, residents blocked the national highway at Mukkali on Monday evening, alleging that officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Revenue department had failed to visit the site despite the seriousness of the incident.The protesters sat on the highway, demanding the immediate intervention of the authorities and an assessment of the situation.
