Lakers legend dies at 76: ‘Forever in our hearts’

He was 76.Tanter was the announcer for Lakers games for 43 years.The Lakers posted, “Lawrence Tanter, forever in our hearts as a member of the Lakers family,” on X, along with a statement.“We are deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of legendary Lakers public address announcer Lawrence Tanter,” the statement said. “For 43 years, LT’s voice served as the soundtrack to Lakers games at the arena. He will be remembered as a cherished member of the Lakers family.”Tanter retired from his position with the Lakers in June, according to ESPN. His retirement came after he suffered a stroke late in the regular season.Tanter missed the Lakers’ final six home games, as well as the playoffs.“A true original that added his unique style to Showtime. Rest in peace, LT,” Lakers Governor Jeanie Buss posted on X.Tanter joined the Lakers organization in 1982 and was part of 10 NBA titles.After retiring from his position as the public-address announcer in June, he was named Special Advisor for Game Presentation for the Lakers.Buss released a statement about Tanter when he made the transition to the new role.“Lawrence Tanter has been an integral part of the Lakers gameday experience for more than four decades, setting the tone for countless memorable moments with his professionalism, energy and signature booming voice,” she said. “Since the 1980s, LT has narrated every chapter of Lakers basketball, connecting generations of fans, players, coaches and staff while becoming a trusted and unforgettable part of the Lakers experience.
