Kyiv Post Chief Editor Honored with Journalism Award

Kyiv Post is pleased to announce that this week its Chief Editor, Bohdan Nahaylo, received an award from the Institute of Journalism at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. Nahaylo, a veteran British-Ukrainian journalist, author, and former United Nations diplomat, has worked on Ukrainian and regional affairs through several distinct eras, from the final years of the Soviet era to post-Soviet wartime editorial leadership. A tribute from the Kyiv Post team On the occasion of Bohdan Nahaylo receiving this award, the editorial staff and management of Kyiv Post offer our own tribute to the chief editor. While international readers know Bohdan through his decades of writing, scholarship, and diplomatic work ranging from Amnesty International and the British press in London, Radio Liberty in Munich to the United Nations in Geneva and countries as diverse as Angola and Ukraine, those of us working alongside him in Kyiv know him primarily as a dedicated leader, editor, and colleague. When Bohdan assumed the role of chief editor in December 2021, Kyiv Post was being revamped to meet the changing requirements of the day, modernize internally, and broaden the publication’s outreach as Ukraine’s authoritative global voice, using the full possibilities of IT and social media. Transforming Kyiv Post from a newspaper aimed largely at expats in the capital into a “global influencer” required not only vision and management skills, but also a new team ready to implement the changes, along with support from respected figures outside the country. Two months later, Russia launched its full-scale invasion, thereby adding immense new challenges. Directing a newsroom in a capital under missile attack and subject to recurring blackouts required operational resilience and clear editorial priorities. Under Bohdan’s direction, the paper maintained its daily news and in-depth coverage despite logistical and security challenges, delivering verified news, frontline accounts, and analysis to a fast-expanding international audience. Throughout the war, Bohdan has insisted on strict standards of verification and balance. He has continually reminded reporters that Ukraine is best served not by propaganda or unverified claims, but by accurate reporting, careful documentation, sober strategic assessment, and active external networking and cooperation. He has not been afraid to speak out when the situation has called for it. For the Kyiv Post team, working under Bohdan’s leadership has been an ongoing lesson in newsroom discipline and professionalism. He has encouraged reporters to check claims thoroughly, write clearly, and avoid sensationalism, emphasizing that credible daily journalism and analysis provide the essential record future history will rely on and on which our reputation depends. Speaking on behalf of the publication’s management, Chief Executive Officer Luc Chenier emphasized that “Bohdan’s steady direction during wartime, his deep historical knowledge, and his defense of editorial independence have been vital to the newspaper’s ongoing work.
