KSR Today: Will Stein takes the stage, La Familia vs. The Ville, and more

We have a busy Monday ahead, potentially the biggest Monday of the summer. Buckle up for SEC Media Days kicking off, with KSR in the house to talk to Will Stein and follow everything else going on in Tampa, Florida. Then, tonight, a rematch of La Familia vs. The Ville as the series heads to Freedom Hall for Game 2 of their best-of-three series. It all gets started early, so settle in and get caught up with a new edition of KSR Today. The college football season is right around the corner, and its talkin’ season begins today with SEC Media Days. The SEC’s summer football conference moved to Tampa this year, and Big Blue Nation won’t have to wait long to hear from Will Stein. The first-time head coach will lead off the interviews on Day 1, quite a change from Kentucky’s usual place on the last day in the past. Stein will be joined by his quarterback, Kenny Minchey, as well as a couple of homegrown veterans in Ty Bryant and Willie Rodriguez. We can expect to hear Stein’s confidence that has fueled BBN’s excitement since he took the job, plus roster comments and more as he previews the season. He is expected at the podium at 1:30 p.m., and you can watch live on SEC Network or the ESPN app. Missouri’s Eli Drinkwitz, Oklahoma’s Brent Venables, and Tennessee’s Josh Heupel will follow Stein in Monday’s rotation. Game 2 of La Familia vs The Ville tonight The Basketball Tournament saw a thriller in Lexington over the weekend, as La Familia escaped The Ville’s late comeback to win Game 1 of their three-game series, 72-68. The non-alums scored 42 points to carry Kentucky’s TBT team, with Andrew Harrison adding 14 points to lead the former Wildcats. Willie Cauley-Stein missed the second half with an ankle injury. Tonight, the series moves to Louisville’s Freedom Hall, where The Ville is a 1.5-point favorite in Game 2. La Familia will need Cauley-Stein back to help with Montrezl Harrell, who was key in the near-comeback on Saturday. Archie Goodwin is expected to join the team as well. Peach Jam in review KSR’s Jack Pilgrim and Zack Geoghegan are home from their trip to North Augusta, South Carolina, to track the top high school prospects in the country at Nike’s EYBL Peach Jam. The recruiting event of the summer had one of its best-ever AAU performances that will undoubtedly shake up the next round of player rankings in the 2027 class, plus KSR learned of new targets and offers on Mark Pope’s big board. Pope wasn’t at Peach Jam the entire time, but Kentucky was well represented by assistant coaches, and eventually Pope was at the Riverview Park Activities Center. Kam Williams is a non-participant, wearing a knee brace and riding a scooter as he tries to get healed in time for the season. Newcomer Franck Kepnang has also sat out, and fans recently noticed in photos and at TBT that Justin McBride hasn’t been with the team lately. An early summer standout, McBride has been M.I.A. since the team’s Vegas trip, which has driven speculation around his status. Then, a Facebook post asking about McBride’s whereabouts received a comment from McBride’s father, who cleared the air and put an end to the rumor mill about his son. “Wow Wow my son has been under the weather for the past week and he was in Vegas,” McBride wrote. “Summer flu bug, he is fine. With my Aaron (Rodgers) voice: R E L A X.” When other commenters warned him of BBN’s overbearing passion on social media, Regis McBride added, “Oh no just throwing that out there to calm the waters lol. I don’t plan on engaging in anymore of this for damn sure. Appreciate.” Kentucky finds running back depth at the JUCO level Kentucky’s running back room added more depth over the weekend, with the addition of a JUCO talent right before training camp. Ahmir Smith spent last year at Garden City CC in Kansas and now joins the Wildcats for the upcoming 2026 season. At 5-10, 204 pounds, Smith rushed for 322 yards and five touchdowns on 74 carries, adding another three touchdowns on 14 receptions. A South Carolina native, Smith originally signed with Northern Illinois before changing course to JUCO, and will have three seasons of eligibility remaining. [JUCO RB Ahmir Smith commits to Kentucky football] Spain won its second World Cup Spain was the most dominant team in this year’s World Cup, and the Spaniards finished the job on Sunday, beating defending champ Argentina in MetLife Stadium. The match needed extra time, when Spain’s Ferran Torres scored in the second period of extra time to break a 0-0 tie. Argentina couldn’t find a late equalizer as it had done so many times before, as Spain completed its seventh clean sheet of the tournament, allowing only one goal in eight matches. That’s a World Cup record. Congratulations to the World Cup champs, and so long to a fun six weeks of soccer in America. It moves to Spain, Portugal, and Morocco in 2030.
