KPop Demon Hunters Is This Generation's Buffy The Vampire Slayer KPop Demon Hunters centers on K-pop girl group Huntrix, who are a lot more than just global pop sensations. The Huntrix girls are also the latest demon hunters, and their mission is to keep demons away from the human world. For that, they use their singing voices to create a magical barrier known as Honmoon. However, their mission gets more complicated with the appearance of boy band Saja Boys, who are actually demons in disguise. KPop Demon Hunters is an unexpectedly great combination of K-pop culture, fantasy, action, comedy, and drama, and it’s surprisingly similar to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The show follows Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar), the latest in a long line of young women chosen by destiny to battle the forces of darkness. These women are known as “Slayers”, and so Buffy has to fight against vampires, demons, monsters, ghosts, and other creatures. The Huntrix girls, like Buffy (and the rest of the Slayers), are part of a long line of female heroes given special abilities to fight demons and evil forces, all while they also do their best to live normal lives and balance them with their destinies. KPop Demon Hunters and Buffy the Vampire Slayer both have sharp, smart, witty dialogue, with relatable heroines despite their fantasy elements, which has made it easy for them to connect with a wide audience. Buffy the Vampire Slayer ran for seven seasons from 1997 to 2003, and it was on its way to getting a long-awaited revival. The project was confirmed in 2025, with Chloé Zhao directing the pilot episode, Gellar back as Buffy, and Ryan Kiera Armstrong leading the show as the current Slayer. With Gwi-Ma still alive, KPop Demon Hunters 2 will surely go deeper into its demon lore. In addition to this, KPop Demon Hunters 2 can also explore the backstory of demon hunters a lot more deeply, especially Rumi’s past, as her mother was a hunter. There are also the backstories of Mira and Zoey, which are mostly unknown at the moment, so it’s unclear how and why they became demon hunters. KPop Demon Hunters, then, can learn a lot from the worldbuilding of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the balance of its characters’ arcs, as well as the many possibilities that the fantasy genre can bring.
