Sign in to your TheGamer account Hideo Kojima and PlayStation have had a long relationship for well over a decade at this point, even helping to establish Kojima Productions back in 2015. Despite the close relationship and numerous critically acclaimed releases, a series of recent announcements have revealed that the two parties have cut ties over the development of Kojima Productions' upcoming stealth espionage game Physint. With the official Xbox X account being the first to announce the newly expanded partnership, the deal will not only shift the production of Physint's development over to Xbox in addition to the already Xbox-sponsored OD, but also "extend beyond games, with Xbox and Kojima Productions collaborating across film and television to bring new stories to broader audiences." Kojima's Physint Nearly Got Shut Down By PlayStation Going into more detail about the situation, Hideo Kojima posted on his own X account that in June of this year, "unexpectedly received notice from PlayStation Studios that they would cancel the Physint project." Citing how important the project was to himself and the studio as a whole, Kojima "spent the last three months searching tirelessly for a new partner" before landing with Xbox once again. While the backup partnership doesn't come as a major surprise considering Kojima Productions was already working with Xbox to produce the highly-anticipated horror game OD, PlayStation's decision is still a major upset considering it was all but confirmed that Physint was going to be yet another PlayStation exclusive when it eventually released. In response to the news, there have been plenty of expectations over why PlayStation might have dropped the project, citing its lengthy development time estimated to release in 2030, on top of the notably poor financial success Death Stranding 2 faced despite its critical acclaim. PlayStation didn't give any hints in their official response on X either, and even went as far as to say that their "relationship remains strong," and that the studio will "look forward to continued close collaboration with Hideo Kojima and his award-winning independent studio in the future." Physint Might Wind Up Another Xbox Exclusive Despite Xbox not being in the most favorable light right now, considering the company's recent mass layoffs that saw several studios and projects get shut down, its own CEO, Asha Sharma, is reportedly fully on board with the partnership moving forward. Considering that Kojima's current OD managed to survive the wave of layoffs, Physint will likely have the same level of protection given the high critical acclaim surrounding the studio and its projects, which should reflect nicely on Xbox if they manage to succeed yet again after having saved the project from cancellation entirely. Combined with the fact that Xbox has been doubling down on first-party game development partnerships and even bringing back Xbox exclusives, it wouldn't be much of a stretch to see Metal Gear Solid's spiritual successor join the library of games unavailable on PlayStation after the recent production change, but we'll likely have to wait until closer to Physint's promising release to see for sure.
