Dressed in a brown tweed blazer and matching waistcoat with a burgundy tie and blue shirt, Charles laughed as he sported the traditional tartan garment with bright red knee-length socks. Meanwhile Camilla wore a green button-up jacket with matching feathered hat and a red skirt. The King and Queen were spotted smiling throughout the event, held at The Princess Royal and Duke of Fife Memorial Park in the village of Braemar. Charles grinned as he presented trophies and took part in the 'ancient' festivities, which can be traced back to the time of King Malcolm Canmore, more than 900 years ago. The events included sprint and middle distance races as well as long, high and triple jump competitions, with the winning sportsmen and women taking home thousands of pounds in prize money. The gathering also featured pipe bands, Highland Dancing, Tug-O-War battles as well as track races. With heritage dating back nearly a millennium, to the time of King Malcolm Canmore, the Braemar Gathering has been run in the modern form since 1832. The annual event attracts large crowds, who come to acclaim their monarch as 'chieftain'. The Braemar Highland Society, originally named the Braemar Wright Society in July 1815 was granted Royal status by Queen Victoria in 1866, organises the gathering each year. Since 1848, the gathering has been attended often by monarchs and other members of the Royal Family. Prize money of £4,500 is offered for the total of 15 competitions and £950 for the eight youth events. Competitors also stand to win medals and trophies throughout the festivities.
