The Cobbles Copper has had is life turned upside down by a shocking breast cancer diagnosis, due to the revelation that the BRCA gene runs in his family. Despite his best efforts to keep it secret, Kit ended up confiding the diagnosis in Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce) when he was at his lowest. Then after an appointment with a consultant where Kit was advised to open up to his family, he finally bit the bullet and shared the news with his loved ones, starting with his mum Bernie Winter-Alahan (Jane Hazlegrove) initially, he did eventually relent. Kit shared his diagnosis with Bernie (Picture: ITV) Kit made a huge step forward with her, as Bernie vowed to support him on his journey. He will need all the support he can get, as Kit’s battle with cancer is sure to affect those closest to him – like his son Brody Michaelis (Ryan Mulvey). The two haven’t always had the closest father/son relationship, because for the longest time, they weren’t father and son at all. Raised as the son of nightmare Corrie neighbours Mick and Lou Michaelis (Joe Layton and Farrel Hegarty), Brody made the heartbreaking discover that his real dad was Kit, a result of a teenage fling with Lou. With both parents in prison for violent attacks, Brody had a hard time bonding with Kit. Initially Kit rejected fatherhood role and told Bernie to stop referring to Brody as his kid. However, over time, there has been a thawing between the pair that has led to reconciliation. The more time the two have spent together, the greater the father/son bond has developed. Brody and Kit haven’t had the easiest father/son relationship (Picture: ITV) Obviously, now the BRCA gene has been proven to run in the Winter family, Brody is as likely to be affected as anyone. This has been weighing on Kit’s mind for a while, and he finally unburdens his worries during this emotional scene, in an upcoming episode of Coronation Street – where Brody shaves his dad’s head. Preparing for aggressive treatment, Kit sits nervously in the chair as Brody shaves his dad’s head. Father and son attempt to make awkward banter, with Kit quipping that his lad is no barber, while Brody jokes that Kit is making no attempt at chat – such as talking about City or where he’s going on holiday. With heavy gallows humour, Kit bitterly reflects that his next trip might be courtesy of Shuttleworths’ Independent Funeral Services. Brody tells him not to joke like that, and doesn’t want his dad to die. Once the haircut is done, Kit self-consciously examines himself in the mirror. In a moment of vulnerability, Brody asks Kit if he’s scared. Despite looking scared, Kit claims he’s not and stoically remarks ‘no point, is there?’ ‘Whether I’m bricking it or not, it’s going to do its thing. I’m just sorry what it means for you.
