Ever since Kingdom Hearts came to PC, it’s garnered a truly impressive modding community. Custom Keyblades, recreated worlds, playable characters, and even the coliseum mode that Kingdom Hearts 3 desperately needed have all been lovingly crafted by fans over the years. It’s enough to make PC the best place to play Kingdom Hearts. Of course, modding has taken a bit of a turn over the past few months, with AI tools becoming so powerful that they’re able vibecode mods that would have been frankly impossible before. I’ve been unswayed by the tidal wave of vibecoded creations, but there’s one for the first Kingdom Hearts that feels like it’s gunning for me personally. Vibecoded Kingdom Hearts Mod Gives The First Game KH2’s Combat I’ve Dreamed Of This Day, But Now It Feels Icky As highlighted by Kingdom Hearts YouTuber thegamersjoint, an interesting new mod has been making the rounds on Nexus Mods. The mod, which was posted by JamesPMx but created “exclusively” through vibecoding, brings the combat and movement mechanics of Kingdom Hearts 2 to the first game. Not only does that mean Sora has access to his combos, magic (including my beloved Reflect), and finishers from the sequel, but he’s also got access to all of the Drive Forms. As someone who’s seen how hard Kingdom Hearts fans worked to bring just one of those to Kingdom Hearts 3, it’s a little mind-boggling that we’re at a place where AI can do all of them at once with no bother. In a touch that I’d praise if this was made by a person and not Claude, you can even customise the camera and change the battle quotes to either game’s style. As wish-fulfilling as it is to see Wisdom Form, Magnet Burst, and Guard Break being used in Kingdom Hearts, the vibecoded nature of it all leaves a very sour taste. I’m sure some will say “get with the times, old man”, but when the end result is spaghetti code, wasted water, and scoffing at creative intent without your own hard work, I’d much rather celebrate the human-made mods. While what the mod does is undeniably impressive and JamesPMx promises they “tested everything” they possibly could, the comments on both Twitter and YouTube suggest I’m not alone in getting emotional whiplash after realising the AI component. In fact, Twitter user and KH modder dallin1016 put it best, calling it a "spit in the face of us mod creators that put so much heart and soul in our work over countless hours".
