King hails bond between Ukraine and UK to mark country’s independence day

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has thanked the King for his “deeply moving and exceptionally meaningful” message marking the country’s independence day.The monarch sent the war-torn country his “sincere and special wishes” to commemorate the 35th anniversary of its independence from the Soviet Union.Charles, who is holidaying at Balmoral ahead of the return of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to the UK, wrote that he was “greatly encouraged by the enduring friendship” of the two nations.On Monday, Andy Burnham made his first trip to Kyiv as Prime Minister to underline support for the country amid the war with Russia, announcing the UK would provide Ukraine with blueprints for long-range Scalp missiles.The King said: “As we reflect upon Ukraine’s proud history, rich culture and indomitable national spirit, we are reminded of the extraordinary fortitude Ukrainians have shown in defending their homeland and preserving the identity and values which define your nation.“Such steadfast determination continues to command profound admiration throughout the United Kingdom and around the world.”He added: “My wife and I send our sincere and special wishes to you and to all Ukrainians for the possibility of peace, security and prosperity in the year ahead.”Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, right, welcomed Prime Minister Andy Burnham to Kyiv on Monday (Henry Nicholls/PA)PA WireMr Zelensky, who appears to have forged a strong bond with the King at their numerous audiences, wrote in response: “Warm and sincere Independence Day wishes from His Majesty King Charles III and Her Majesty The Queen are deeply moving and exceptionally meaningful.”He praised the King’s emphasis on Ukraine’s history and unyielding national spirit, and spoke of the “special bond” between the two countries.The president added of the King, who is still being treated for cancer: “I wish His Majesty good health and continued success, as well as peace and prosperity for the United Kingdom and its people.”
