Key accused in 30-kg ganja case arrested in Tripura

Representative image | Photo Credit: Getty Images/iStockphoto A 26-year-old man, who is a key absconding accused allegedly involved in supplying ganja from Tripura to Chennai, was arrested in Tripura in connection with a case involving the seizure of 30 kg of ganja in Chintadripet.The accused, Sagarsil, 26, of Bishalgarh in West Tripura, was arrested by a special team from the Chintadripet police station on August 28 with the assistance of the Tripura police. He was subsequently brought to Chennai and remanded in judicial custody on Monday.The case dates back to June 11, when a police team led by the Chintadripet inspector was conducting surveillance near May Day Park. The team arrested Akash Das, 23, a native of Agartala in Tripura, for allegedly possessing ganja for illegal sale. The police seized 30 kg of ganja and a mobile phone from him.During the investigation, police identified Sagarsil as a key accused and learnt that he was hiding in Tripura. Acting on the instructions of senior police officials, a special team travelled to the State and, with the assistance of the local police, conducted a search for him and arrested Sagarsil. The police said that Sagarsil had allegedly been procuring ganja in Tripura and sending it to Chennai through associates for illegal sale. Published - September 01, 2026 06:44 pm IST
