Keralam power crisis: KSEB to intensify demand-side management activities

The KSEB has repeated its request to the general public to voluntarily reduce the use of electricity between 7 p.m. and midnight. | Photo Credit: FILE PHOTO With electricity consumption remaining high in September, the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has urged the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) to examine whether it can shift water pumping operations “to the extent technically feasible” to the daytime.In a September 23 circular on intensifying demand-side management activities, the power utility has also asked industries to shift their energy-sensitive processes to the solar hours (between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. for the purpose of the KSEB measures) or other off-peak hours. The KSEB has also repeated its request to the general public to voluntarily reduce the use of electricity between 7 p.m. and midnight.“The State’s daily electricity consumption has touched 95.39 million units (mu) during September, with the peak demand reaching 5,400 megawatts. During this period, the highest demand has generally been experienced between 7 p.m. and midnight. Voluntary reduction of electricity consumption during peak hours and shifting of non-essential loads to off-peak/solar hours can significantly help in managing the prevailing demand-supply situation,” the circular said.
