Kerala University Syndicate scraps ₹2-crore sculpture park project

Kerala University Vice-Chancellor in-charge Mohanan Kunnummal. The Kerala University Syndicate on Thursday (July 23, 2026) revoked its earlier decision to establish a ₹2-crore sculpture park at the Karyavattom campus.The sculpture park, proposed in the university’s 2025-26 budget by the previous Left-dominant Syndicate, was expected to feature statues of eminent personalities including Karl Marx, Charles Darwin, Socrates, and Rabindranath Tagore. The park was planned on both sides of the main entrance to the campus.The Syndicate, chaired by Vice-Chancellor in-charge Mohanan Kunnummal, decided to utilise the earmarked funds for creating a garden on the campus and enhancing student amenities. The Syndicate also resolved to submit project proposals to secure financial assistance under the Union government’s Khelo India scheme for upgrading sports infrastructure on the university campus.Moreover, the meeting constituted a Syndicate sub-committee to prepare a comprehensive policy framework for autonomous colleges affiliated with Kerala University. The committee will hold consultations with the managements of autonomous colleges and examine the relevant University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations, government guidelines and university statutes before submitting its report.Regarding the land encroachment case involving the AKG Centre, the Syndicate decided to file a counter affidavit before the Kerala High Court and to complete the survey and demarcation of the university’s land within a stipulated time-frame.
