Kentucky transfer commit Cooper Corkrean agrees to deal with Kansas City Royals

Kentucky needed to rebuild its pitching staff through the transfer portal. One of the biggest wins occurred when New Mexico transfer Cooper Corkrean flipped his commitment from Houston to Kentucky on June 17. One month later, that commitment lost a lot of value. The Kansas City Royals selected Corkrean in the 18th round of the 2026 MLB Draft with the 539th overall pick. Baseball America’s draft database reports that the left-handed pitcher reached a deal worth $150,000 with the AL Central franchise. That means Corkrean will not pitch at Kentucky in 2027. This Katy (Texas) Cinco Ranch product spent two seasons at Galveston (Texas) College before moving to New Mexico. Corkrean made 21 appearances with two starts for the Lobos. The left-handed pitcher logged 59 innings in 2026. The bullpen arm finished the season 6-2 with a 5.49 ERA, 1.44 WHIP, 59 strikeouts (22.5% K rate), 24 walks, six HBPs (11.4% free pass rate), and four saves. Kentucky lost six pitchers to the transfer portal this offseason. Five of those pitchers logged bullpen innings for the Cats this season. The Cats also lost top relief pitchers Nile Adcock (5-1, 4.75 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, 36 IP, 50 K), Jack Bennett (2-4, 5.87 ERA, 1.49 WHIP, 38.1 IP, 38 K), and utility man Connor Mattison (2-2, 8.10 ERA, 1.53 WHIP, 36.2 IP, 37 K) this offseason. A bullpen reload was needed. Cooper Corkrean was expected to be a big part of the relief staff. That is now off the table. LHP Kale Hammer (Seattle), RHP Logan Hastings (Maryland), RHP PJ Craig (Rider), and RHP Mason Snyder (Western Carolina) are currently the four pitchers remaining in Kentucky’s transfer haul. The Bat could still add to the rotation over the summer via the portal market.
