Kelsey Grammer Sets New NBC Show 22 Years After Frasier

This article covers a developing story. Continue to check back with us as we will be adding more information as it becomes available.22 years after Frasier ended, Kelsey Grammer is returning to NBC. The character of Dr. Frasier Crane originated on the all-time great sitcom Cheers, before leading his own spinoff. Frasier aired for eleven seasons, culminating with the series finale on May 13, 2004. A Frasier revival ran for two seasons from 2023-2024, but it was on Paramount+, and not NBC or their streaming service, Peacock. Deadline now reports that Grammer is attached to star in and produce a new drama series called Pops, which is in development at the network. Chicago Med writer-producer Danny Weiss is writing the series that features Grammer as a man who has aged out of his successful career and decides to join the world of emergency medicine in order to get a fresh start. Unlike the comedic Frasier, it is a drama. Pops is based on the true story of Maryland resident Ed Levien, who followed up a successful advertising career by becoming an EMT while in his 60s. His younger co-workers nicknamed him "Pops" and he worked as an EMT for 12 years until retiring at the age of 76 as of 2025. Levien is aboard the series as an executive producer alongside Grammer, Weiss, and Jordan McMahon for the Universal Television series. A show based on a real-life story of someone changing careers later in life has proven to be a massive hit for ABC's The Rookie, which begins with John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) becoming the oldest rookie in the LAPD. The Rookie season 9 is premiering in January, has consistently proven to be one of ABC's best-performing series, and has a new spinoff, The Rookie: North, is debuting its first season in January. Nolan is in his 40s when switching careers, though, while Pops is in his 60s. With NBC looking for a potential rival to The Rookie, it has returned to veterans with the network. In addition to Cheers and Frasier, Grammer played Dr. Crane in episodes of NBC's Wings, 30 Rock, and most recently, The Hunting Party. As for Weiss, he spent 10 seasons working on Chicago Med, starting out as a staff writer and eventually becoming a co-executive producer. Further preparing him to take on the medical drama of Pops is his experience on Fox's House, as he was the show's in-house medical researcher for four seasons. More to come...
