Kellogg’s ends production at iconic UK cereal factory after 88 years with hundreds of jobs lost

KELLOGG’S has officially ended production at its iconic UK cereal factory after 88 years. The closure is expected to result in 360 job losses as production transfers to an alternative site. Now, production is set to be transferred to the company’s Portable Foods facility in Wrexham, north Wales, with around 360 jobs set to be lost as a result. Kellanova, which oversees the entire Kellogg’s operation in the UK, announced the decision to close the Greater Manchester factory in 2024, where it was ruled that the site was not viable for modern production. According to Kellanova, it’s “laid out in a way that made sense in the 1930s, with food travelling up and down six floors to be made. “With changes in industrial design and technology, you just wouldn’t lay out a factory like that nowadays.” Kellanova further said that only half of the space in the building was being used for production, and that it “can’t currently see a long-term future for our Trafford Park factory.” American-founded Kellogg’s, launched in 1906, is said to have employed multiple generations of families at the Trafford Park. Most read in Money Earlier this year, the Trafford Local Studies and Archive Centre in Sale honoured the “iconic” brand with an exhibition, with vintage promotional materials and Tony the Tiger cut-outs on display to the public. At its peak, the Kellogg’s factory produced over one million boxes of breakfast cereal every day, such as Coco Pops, Shreddies and Corn Flakes. The brand will still keep its presence in Greater Manchester, with its MediaCity office in Salford employing around 520 people. Kellogg’s factory in Manchester will remain open until the end of the year, with Kellanova set to work with local partners to mark the site’s legacy in the region.
