We rode the electric maxi-scooter with a 5.04kWh battery, 115kmph top speed, 180km claimed range and a host of features.Keeway is not exactly a household name in the Indian two-wheeler market. It remains a niche manufacturer, offering a range of motorcycles and scooters through a network of more than 40 dealerships across the country. Its portfolio includes models such as the SR series and V302C, and now joining them is the Keeway Hypevolt R, an all-electric maxi-scooter.The Hypevolt R aims to combine the performance of an electric scooter with the comfort and practicality of a maxi-scooter. With a 5.04kWh battery, claimed 180km IDC range, 115kmph top speed and multiple riding modes, it is also one of the more performance-focused electric scooters in its segment. So, how does the Keeway Hypevolt R fare when you actually get on and ride it?Keeway Hypevolt R: Design and features The Keeway Hypevolt R stands out with its sharp, flowing front end, featuring twin LED headlights and sequential light strips that serve as DRLs and indicators. There is little doubt that the Keeway Hypevolt R looks unique. The front end has a sharp yet flowing design, dominated by twin LED headlights and light strips that double up as DRLs and indicators, with a sequential pattern. The 14-inch alloy wheels are mounted on telescopic forks, while the chunky tyres give the electric maxi-scooter a purposeful stance. In profile, the Hypevolt R looks substantial, measuring 2,044mm long with a 1,454mm wheelbase. In profile, the sheer size of the scooter is immediately apparent. The Hypevolt R is 2,044mm long, with a 1,454mm wheelbase, making it a substantial machine. The design follows traditional maxi-scooter cues, with a central spine and footboards for the rider and passenger on either side. The central spine houses two removable batteries with a combined 5.04kWh capacity. The central spine houses twin removable battery packs, offering a combined capacity of 5.04kWh. These can be charged on board or removed and charged separately. This clever use of space offers two benefits. First, it helps lower the centre of gravity, and second, it frees up a generous 27 litres of underseat storage. The space is genuinely usable and can easily accommodate the charger along with an Indian-spec helmet. The electric scooter offers a generous 27-litre underseat storage space. The inner side of the front apron also houses two reasonably deep, covered cubby holes. This gives you peace of mind that your belongings won't fly out or be easily stolen while on the move. The Hypevolt R also gets a motorcycle-type handlebar with the switchgear mounted on it. While the buttons are well placed, a little more tactile feel would have made things better. The Hypevolt R features a motorcycle-style handlebar with integrated switchgear. The scooter comes with a 5-inch colour display that is easy to read. It is bright enough to remain clearly visible even in strong sunlight. However, the layout feels a little cluttered. A cleaner interface, with key information displayed more prominently, would have been preferable. The 5-inch colour display is bright and legible in sunlight, though its layout feels slightly cluttered. The display also shows the feed from the reversing camera, which is a useful addition on a scooter of this size. However, image quality isn't particularly good, especially in darker areas. The mirrors are also worth mentioning. Thanks to the scooter's blind-spot assist, they feature an indicator that lights up when traffic is detected behind. It is clear and effective, and we believe more two-wheelers should adopt this feature. The neatly integrated LED tail-light works well, but the oversized rear mudguard looks awkward. Last but not least, the rear could have been better executed. The LED tail-light is neatly integrated, but the rear mudguard looks odd and, quite simply, oversized. A slicker tyre hugger would have improved the overall appearance.Keeway Hypevolt R: Seating position and comfort The flat, supportive seats remained comfortable even over a couple of hundred kilometres. This is where the Hypevolt R shines. The scooter comes with dual seats that are flat and supportive. Over the couple of hundred kilometres we rode the scooter, we never felt much discomfort.Additionally, the 770mm seat height is low enough for shorter riders. The footboard is also worth mentioning here. It is long and continues all the way back, allowing the pillion to sit comfortably as well. The handlebar falls to hand easily, and overall the Hypevolt R offers a comfortable riding position, whether you are the rider or pillion. For an electric maxi-scooter designed for both urban commuting and longer rides, this is an important strength.Keeway Hypevolt R: Battery, motor, riding modes and rangeThe Keeway Hypevolt R comes with a centrally mounted PMSM electric motor that drives the rear wheel through a belt drive. The motor offers a peak output of 12kW.There are three riding modes: Eco, Normal and Sport. Keeway claims the Hypevolt R can accelerate from 0-40kmph in just 2.3 seconds and achieve a top speed of 115kmph.Power comes from the twin removable battery packs, which have a combined capacity of 5.04kWh. Keeway claims an IDC range of up to 180km, although real-world range will naturally depend on riding mode, speed, traffic, rider weight and road conditions. The removable battery setup is particularly useful for owners who may not have convenient access to a charging point where they park the scooter. It also gives the Hypevolt R a degree of flexibility that many larger electric scooters don't offer.Keeway Hypevolt R: How is it to ride? The Hypevolt R feels comfortable from the get-go, with well-judged weight distribution making its 140kg kerb weight easy to manage. The Hypevolt R makes the rider feel comfortable the moment you settle into the seat. It is a large scooter, but the weight distribution is well judged and the 140kg kerb weight never feels intimidating. In Eco mode, it behaves much like a regular scooter. Acceleration is smooth rather than ballistic, and it settles at around 40-45kmph, making it well suited to prime-time city traffic. For everyday commuting, Eco mode delivers a relaxed and predictable experience.Switch to Normal mode and the Hypevolt R changes character. Acceleration is noticeably quicker, while the top speed is capped at around 70kmph. On open stretches, we could comfortably cruise at 60-65kmph, with enough reserve for quick overtakes. This makes Normal the ideal mode for everyday city riding. The fun really begins in Sport mode. Acceleration is now what you would expect from a performance-oriented EV, and a firm twist of the throttle can literally push you back as the speed climbs rapidly past 80kmph. In Sport mode, the Hypevolt R easily crosses 100kmph, delivering strong performance while keeping the motor impressively quiet. The scooter crosses the 100kmph barrier with ease, making Sport the most entertaining mode of the lot. Despite the performance, there is no sense of strain, with the electric motor remaining remarkably quiet throughout. When it comes to ride and handling, the Hypevolt R impresses as well. Despite its weight and substantial dimensions, it feels relatively agile in traffic. A slight lean is all it takes to change lanes without fuss, and combined with the punchy motor, this makes the scooter appealing to enthusiasts looking for a more engaging electric two-wheeler.Ride quality is good too, with the rear suspension doing a commendable job of soaking up bumps and ruts. The front end, however, feels a tad stiff, allowing sharper potholes to make their presence felt.Is that a deal breaker? Not really. The only niggle with our test scooter was a mild rattle from the front apron. However, we would give it the benefit of the doubt, as this was a test unit that had likely seen some fairly hard use.Keeway Hypevolt R: Verdict The Keeway Hypevolt R blends distinctive styling, strong performance and practicality, but stiff suspension, quirky design elements and concerns around aftersales support temper its otherwise compelling value proposition. The Keeway Hypevolt R satisfies the need of those who yearn for an electric maxi-scooter. It looks distinctive, has enough performance to make every ride interesting and, at the same time, offers the practicality required for family usage. The 5.04kWh battery, 180km claimed IDC range, 115kmph top speed and three riding modes give the Hypevolt R a strong performance and usability proposition. Features such as blind-spot assist and a reversing camera further add to its technology, convenience and safety credentials. At Rs 1.99 lakh (ex-showroom), the Keeway Hypevolt R also makes a compelling case on value. It isn't perfect, with the stiff front suspension, cluttered display and oversized rear mudguard taking away some of the shine. More importantly, Keeway will need to focus on aftersales service, spare parts availability and dealer development if it wants the Hypevolt R to succeed in India's rapidly expanding electric scooter market.Subscribe to Auto Today Magazine - EndsPublished On: Aug 24, 2026 15:07 IST
