Keegan Brown has plans to upgrade Kentucky basketball’s scouting process

Roster-building in college athletics has changed drastically in just a few years. High school recruiting and in-house development still matter a ton, but how you scout and build a team has undergone major changes thanks to NIL and the transfer portal. There is now non-stop free agency and player compensation budgets to meet. Those who evolve the best in this new era will likely have the best chance to succeed. We’ve seen new Kentucky head football coach Will Stein recently invest in a front office with a general manager, director of player personnel, and many other employees below them who fill traditional recruiting roles and now scouting jobs. The push in football has become real with some programs having beefed up personnel staffs and employing some remote scouts. Kentucky director of roster management Keegan Brown plans to bring something similar to the men’s basketball program in Lexington. Robinson runs salary cap strategy while Sergent and Shelton deal with NIL, rev-share contracts, and legal language. Meanwhile, Brown seems to run scouting along with Pope. Some scouting changes seem to be happening in Lexington. The Wildcats have heavily used the transfer portal to build rosters ever since Pope arrived. That might not change anytime soon.
