KDE Plasma 6.8 Remote Desktop To Enjoy Lower Latency Performance

Along with KDE Plasma 6.8 beta releasing this week, there were some other interesting Plasma changes this week worthy of a shout-out. For those using remote desktop capabilities with KRDP, remote desktop connections should now enjoy lower latency performance. The change made by David Edmundson is to drop incoming frames when the queue builds up for when the encoder is running quicker than the client can encode. The change is described as "keeps latency very fast." Squeezing in for Plasma 6.8 are improvements to the Input Method widget for enhancing the experience of switching between on-screen keyboard visibility roles as well as for manually showing the keyboard in XWayland apps. Clipboard settings around copied image data and MIME actions are now more comprehensible in time for the Plasma 6.8 release. Also landing this week was Wayland commit-timing protocol support for KWin. Plasma 6.8 will also no longer crash if querying the wallpaper using D-Bus while the wallpaper settings dialog is open and then switching between wallpaper plug-ins. Invalid configuration files within /etc/xdg/Xwayland-session.d/ will also no longer prevent KWin from launching KWin. Plus various other fixes throughout. Plasma 6.8 Beta 2 is coming up on 24 September while the official release of Plasma 6.8.0 is expected on 14 October that also marks the 30th anniversary of KDE's inception.
