Katy Perry to ‘tell all about dark marriage to Russell Brand in book and documentary’

The couple, who tied the knot in India, were married for 14 months before Brand famously ended it by text – a moment captured in the making of her Part of Me concert documentary, just before Perry was due onstage for a major show – and announced their split in December 2011. In the intervening 15 years, Roar singer Perry hasn’t said much about their marriage and divorce, other than telling Vogue in a 2013 interview that he was ‘very controlling’; she also said she found it ‘really hurtful’ to see his reaction to the atmosphere of her being the boss on her world tour. Brand, 51, faced three charges of rape, three of sexual assault and one of attempted indecent assault against six women, and was found guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault on Thursday at Southwark Crown Court. Insiders claim Perry was waiting for the outcome of his trial but had been in ‘active discussions’ already and is now set to finalise a deal for her take on their relationship. A source told The Mail on Sunday: ‘Katy has received multiple offers over the years to tell her story but would not consider anything until after the trial. She has a lot to say. She and her team have been in active discussions. ‘There is a lot about that marriage which people don’t know. It was a very dark period in her life.’ They also claimed that Perry’s team have been in touch with the likes of Netflix and Hulu to discuss the possibility of the documentary being given a home by one of the streaming giants. Perry was not asked to testify during Brand’s trial, but it was revealed that she could have been in the room during one of Brand’s sexual assaults, which took place in 2009. Brand was convicted of sexually assaulting a female Channel 4 worker after she was forced to give him a massage, and in legal submissions – made public after his conviction – his barrister Ian Winter KC said: ‘The victim says that other people were in the room and witnessed it, possibly including the defendant’s future wife, Ms Katy Perry.’ However, Brand’s legal team argued that his marriage to the US star was irrelevant to the allegations, with prosecutors agreeing not to mention her and the Crown Prosecution Service confirming she was never approached by police or asked to provide a witness statement. Perry’s former husband couldn’t find anyone to take to the stand as a defence witness with relevant information on his behalf during his trial other than himself. However, his current wife Laura Gallacher, 39, told the jury that he was a ‘caring, kind and a wonderful father to our children’ and that ‘I love him very much’. A filmed red carpet interaction between former spouses Brand and Perry has since gone viral in the wake of his convictions, from the 2010 Vanity Fair Oscar Party. In it, while the singer starts by calling out Brand for not watching the awards ceremony when he’s asked for his opinion on it, he later holds up a pin badge or card of some kind that reads ‘Obey’ and she goes quiet. Fans have interpreted this as being a way of Brand asserting control over the singer in public, especially when she was being afforded more attention than him, branding it ‘disgusting’. It has since emerged that at least 10 more women are suspected to have been attacked by Brand, according to The Guardian, who is already facing a lengthy prison sentence for his recent convictions. Following the verdict, it was also revealed that Brand was being investigated over two more rape allegations. Speaking to BBC Breakfast on Friday, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley added that he wouldn’t be surprised if many more women came forward.
