Karl Urban’s Action Hit is Officially One of the Biggest Debuts on Streaming

Published Aug 13, 2026, 6:42 AM EDT Everyone is fighting to be a streaming titan, but Karl Urban may have a claim to that title with Mortal Kombat II, which has arrived to a huge reception on HBO Max, and is currently the network's number two most-streamed film. The Boys star plays Johnny Cage, a washed-up Hollywood action hero who, to his surprise, is called up to become Earth’s champion in a new Mortal Kombat tournament. After a serious start with the 2021 reboot, this sequel injects action, comedy, and fan service into the mix, delivering maximum entertainment value for movie fans and gamers alike. ‘Mortal Kombat II’ Introduces a New Contender Image via Warner Bros. The sequel finds Earthrealm on the verge of the 10th Mortal Kombat tournament against the villainous Outworld, led by Emperor Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford). Among the experienced and deadly fighters chosen to represent humanity is Johnny Cage (Urban), a brash film star who, in reality, is very far from the champion Earth needs. With time running out and allies facing elimination, Cage must learn to be a warrior if he is to fulfill the potential seen in him. Filled with bloody hand-to-hand combat and a variety of frenetic action scenes, the movie follows the format of the game more closely, placing massive significance on each round and dealing out devastating consequences for loss. Many of the first movie’s cast return to show what they can do, but it’s the new addition that truly lights up the screen. Karl Urban Brings the Fun to a Serious Franchise Image via Warner Bros. Pictures The first Mortal Kombat movie created the world of the game and established the lore behind the famous fighting tournament. However, it was also a very serious affair. This follow-up injects more fun into the proceedings, mostly through its charismatic lead: As Cage, Urban introduces a character who is unimpressed by the fantastical world he is introduced to. With rapid-fire quips and think-on-your-feet fighting strategy, he stands out in a sea of earnest performances and allows the audience to have fun with the viewing experience. When asked what his powers are, he replies: “Just incredibly handsome.” The inflated ego and delusions of grandeur belie a deep-seated insecurity, however, as he slowly unveils a man who, despite saving the world numerous times on the big screen, has never truly felt heroic. Following his journey from zero to hero adds some emotional stakes to the movie; his turn as Cage is a highlight, paying tribute to a character who has been in the game franchise since the beginning. However, his performance isn’t the only thing that will delight MK purists. One of the great things about modern video game adaptations is how faithfully they recreate the source material. While in the past, a game might have been used for its name and spun off into something more generic, the directors taking on modern video game adaptations are gamers themselves, and so know exactly how to nod to the fans who will flock to the theater to see their movie. In the case of Mortal Kombat II, there are references to the game everywhere. From game-accurate special moves and fatalities, to a cameo from MK creator Ed Boon, if your knowledge of the franchise is vast, there's plenty to keep an eye out for. However, the movie also embraced visual cues from the games. The opening title sequence reflects that of the original Mortal Kombat II game, and in the IMAX version, the frame expands from letterboxed ratio to full screen when the fight begins, as it does in the game series, switching between cut scenes and fights. All of this adds up to a more authentic experience for those who want to see the beloved franchise truly realized in live action, from filmmakers who understand why it matters. Mortal Kombat II’s strong reception on streaming is testament to the action-packed entertainment Simon McQuoid’s movie has to offer. Adding new blood in the form of a confident Urban freshened up the formula, and created an instant fan favorite. Proving the success of the 2021 movie was no fluke, the story ends with a tease of a third installment, and if it’s anything like this latest adventure, fans can look forward to a flawless victory.
