Kamala Harris signals support for abolishing Electoral College and expanding Supreme Court

“I know this is going to be controversial coming from me, in particular,” she said on Friday. “We need to revisit the Electoral College. We need to revisit the point of expanding the court to 13 justices like we have 13 district courts. We need to revisit, if they so want, statehood for Puerto Rico and D.C.”Harris delivered her remarks to attendees of the National Urban League Annual Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, as she weighs a potential 2028 run for the White House. At the conference, the former vice president said she has “not made a decision” yet regarding her political future and that, for now, she is “fully, sincerely, focused on these midterms.”About a month ago, Harris spoke with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani in a private phone call as part of ongoing communication between the two. Shortly thereafter, Mamdani confirmed he had been in touch with Harris for months. The phone call fueled speculation that she may be trying to curry favor from the Democratic Party‘s progressive wing ahead of another presidential run.Mamdani is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, which recently published a new platform with controversial proposals. Harris appears to be adopting at least one of them.The DSA supports abolishing the Electoral College and replacing the Supreme Court with a new judiciary system subordinate to Congress. The activist organization also openly calls for abolishing the Senate and replacing the president with an executive branch chosen by Congress.Republicans promptly decried the DSA’s “Workers Deserve More” platform, calling the espoused ideas radical and a threat to the separation of powers among the three different branches.Democrats have long cried foul over the Electoral College, pointing to the 2016 election in particular when President Donald Trump bested former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton 304-227, but lost the popular vote. Trump won both the Electoral College and popular vote in the 2024 election against Harris.At the time, Harris did not support expanding the Supreme Court. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) by 11 points and former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg by 17 points. Newsom and Buttigieg are likely 2028 candidates as well.The rest of the Democratic presidential field is expected to feature the likes of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-PA), who are both polling in single digits.
