Kai Havertz claims Arsenal are aiming for the Quadruple as Gunners tease more attacking style of play

FOR much of last season, there was a buzz around Arsenal potentially winning the quadruple. This year, Kai Havertz has already boasted that is exactly what they are aiming to achieve. It would have been the greatest season in English football history, but a spring-time collapse saw the Gunners crash out of both domestic cups in the space of two games. Their experience has grown, and their squad is only getting better, so perhaps Havertz isn’t mad for suggesting Arsenal can target the Quad. Speaking after Arsenal’s 4-1 thrashing of Girona in their pre-season opener, Havertz said: “We want all the trophies. That’s what we’re here for. “We missed out on a lot the last couple of seasons. Obviously, we won the Premier League now, but there’s a lot more that we can do. “We have to reach another level to make that happen. All their time and energy had been put towards achieving that goal, with a blacked-out silhouette of the trophy on the walls of the training ground to remind the players what they had to achieve. There was no Champions League trophy on the walls, nor was there an FA Cup or League Cup. With the Premier League now ticked off, there is a sense that Arsenal’s players can play with a freedom that will allow them to attack every competition— given their defensive approach to the previous campaign. Havertz is convinced that Arsenal have another level they can reach now they are champions. He added: “I think we have to go further. Arsenal are close to completing a deal worth in excess of £70m for Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes, while they are exploring an ambitious move to sign Vinicius Junior from Real Madrid. There’s no lack of ambition in the current squad either, and nobody is resting on their laurels after tasting success last term. Declan Rice has been on the phone to Arteta, calling the boss to ask if he can come back early from his post-World Cup holidays in order to play a part in the campaign from the off. And Havertz himself admitted that he was “buzzing” to get back to work despite his World Cup exploits with Germany. Havertz said: “I feel like after two weeks’ holiday I was buzzing to come back. I feel like we’re all fitting very well together. “You feel the chemistry in the team. Not only on the pitch, also off the pitch. The way we spend the time in the hotel and away from the pitch is amazing. “I think we have a good connection altogether and want to start the season very strong again.” When Havertz lined up against Girona on Saturday night, he looked a cut above most of the other players on the pitch. That will partly be down to the fact he is still in a competitive rhythm from the World Cup, but he is also enjoying fantastic form. His goal against the Spanish second-tier side means that he has now scored eight times in his last 12 appearances for club and country. And Havertz has no problem sharing that limelight and centre-forward spot with top scorers Viktor Gyokeres. The German added: “He [Gyokeres] is easy to play with, because I know which runs he wants and where he wants the pass. “I’ve been on that striker position as well a lot of times, so I understand him quite well. “We have a top connection on and off the pitch, so that helps as well. I think he’s one of the best strikers in the world, and to play with him is very easy.” If Arsenal are genuinely serious about winning the Quadruple, they will need every player at their best. They are already expected to be without William Saliba at the start of the season after the Frenchman’s back injury was exacerbated at the World Cup. But even then, Arteta and is searching for a replacement to ensure the level doesn’t drop in his absence, with Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa discussed. If the Gunners are able to strengthen with a new centre-back as well as Guimaraes and Vinicius, they will start to look like a force to be reckoned with. Couple that with the suggestion that they could lean into a more attacking style now their Premier League drought is over, and Havertz could be right to back them for a clean sweep this season.
