Juniper Green Energy's Rs 1,800-crore initial public offering (IPO) closes for subscription today, August 3. The renewable energy company has attracted investor attention amid India's clean energy push, but analysts say investors should also carefully evaluate the risks before placing their bids. The IPO is entirely a fresh issue of 8 crore equity shares priced between Rs 214 and Rs 225 apiece. At the upper end of the price band, a retail investor needs to invest at least Rs 14,850 for one lot of 66 shares. The IPO is expected to be allotted on August 4 and is tentatively scheduled to list on August 6.Grey market premium (GMP) has remained muted at around Rs 1.75, indicating an expected listing gain of less than 1%, although GMP is unofficial and should not be the sole basis for investment decisions.Master Capital Services has given the IPO an "Invest Now" rating, citing India's long-term renewable energy opportunity and Juniper Green's strong execution capabilities. At the same time, the brokerage has highlighted several risks that investors should understand before subscribing. WHY JUNIPER STANDS OUTAccording to Master Capital Services, Juniper Green is among the top 10 renewable independent power producers (IPPs) in India by total installed capacity. The brokerage noted that the company has a renewable energy portfolio of 7,910.20 MW across solar, wind, wind-solar hybrid and firm and dispatchable renewable energy (FDRE) projects. It also highlighted that Juniper Green was the second-largest bidder in wind-solar hybrid and FDRE tenders between April 2021 and March 2026, with a project conversion rate of 96.8%. Master Capital Services also pointed out that 97.68% of the company's capacity is backed by long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs), which support relatively stable cash flows.WHAT ARE THE KEY RISKS?While recommending the IPO from a long-term perspective, Master Capital Services has identified several risks that could affect the company's future performance.1. Heavy dependence on just two customersThe brokerage said Juniper Green faces "high customer concentration, with the top two off-takers contributing 86.06% of FY26 revenue, posing concentration risk."This means a large share of the company's revenue comes from only two buyers. Any reduction in power purchases, payment delays or contractual changes from these customers could materially affect the company's financial performance.2. Dependence on key suppliersMaster Capital Services also warned about the company's supply chain dependence.According to the brokerage, Juniper Green has "high dependence on key suppliers for critical components, exposing the business to supply chain risk."Renewable energy projects rely heavily on timely supplies of solar modules, wind turbines and battery systems. Delays or shortages could increase project costs and postpone commissioning timelines.3. Land acquisition remains a major challengeLand continues to be one of the biggest hurdles for renewable energy developers.Master Capital Services said the "inability to secure suitable land may delay project execution and impact financial performance."Since large renewable energy projects require significant land parcels, any delays in acquiring land or obtaining approvals could slow the company's expansion plans.4. Long-term PPAs also come with limitationsAlthough long-term PPAs provide revenue visibility, they also carry contractual restrictions. The brokerage said "restrictive PPAs with government off-takers may limit flexibility and increase contractual risk."Such agreements may reduce the company's ability to benefit from favourable market conditions or renegotiate tariffs if circumstances change.5. Competition is intensifyingThe renewable energy sector is becoming increasingly competitive as more companies participate in government auctions.Master Capital Services cautioned that "intense competition in renewable energy auctions may limit project expansion and growth."Aggressive bidding could compress margins and make it harder for companies to win projects at profitable tariffs.SHOULD YOU SUBSCRIBE?Master Capital Services believes India's renewable energy sector remains supported by rising electricity demand, favourable government policies and the country's target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.The brokerage said Juniper Green is "well positioned to benefit from the sector's long-term growth" because of its diversified renewable portfolio, integrated engineering and operations capabilities, long-term PPAs and strategic supplier partnerships.Based on these factors, it has recommended the IPO with an "Invest Now" rating while advising investors to remain aware of the risks highlighted in its report.(Disclaimer: The views, opinions, recommendations, and suggestions expressed by experts/brokerages in this article are their own and do not reflect the views of the India Today Group.
