Set your Garmin alerts, because track and field history could go down this Saturday, July 18, at exactly 10:36 a.m. ET, when Josh Kerr takes the stage at the London Diamond League with the intention of breaking the world record in the mile.Hicham El Guerrouj of Morocco set the standard of 3:43.13 in 1999, at the time holding off Noah Ngeny of Kenya who ran 3:43.40. Since then, only two other men have ever run under 3:44: Jakob Ingebrigtsen (3:43.73) and Yared Nuguse (3:43.97), the latter of whom will be in the race on Saturday.Kerr enters with a personal best of 3:45.34 from 2024 as the 10th-fastest man in history. The 2023 world champion for 1500 meters also won silver and bronze medals in the event at the 2024 and 2021 Olympic Games, respectively.
