The 2025 thriller film will be available to stream on HBO Max, starting on Saturday, October 17, 2026. During its initial theatrical run, the movie underperformed at the box office as it only grossed around $96 million against a budget of $60 million. Reviews for The Amateur were also mixed, garnering a 61% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while its audience score is much higher at 88%. The film centers around introverted CIA decoder Charlie Heller, who faces the most heartbreaking moment of his life when his beloved wife gets killed in a London terrorist attack. When his superiors refuse to take action, Charlie decides to seek revenge himself by embarking on a dangerous international hunt. I n the film, Bernthal plays the small role of CIA operative Jackson O’Brien, who, according to critics, felt like a wasted opportunity because of how insignificant the character is to the plot. The movie was led by Rami Malek, Laurence Fishburne, Rachel Brosnahan, Caitríona Balfe, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Holt McCallany. The Gritty Spy Thriller Has Been A Sleeper Streaming Hit Despite its underwhelming box office performance, The Amateur did find success in streaming. Ahead of its HBO Max release, the 2025 film has already been performing very well on other streaming platforms. This month, it became Prime Video’s seventh most-watched movie in the United States, which is the highest place it has ever been on the list. This is an impressive feat considering that it has been part of the streamer's Top 10 Movies list for 57 days. Besides The Amateur, Bernthal’s other works have also been garnering attention on streaming.
