The film had its world premiere during the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this fall and now returns to Canada for a screening with ScreenRant and Apple Original Films. Being Heumann is directed by Siân Heder and is her first feature film since the Oscar winning CODA in 2021. Being Heumann tells the true story of Judy Heumann (Ruth Madeley), a disability rights activist who led a sit-in in San Francisco’s Federal Building in 1977. The occupation was to protest the lack of action taken by the Secretary of Health and Human Services, Joseph Califano (Mark Ruffalo), and other governmental bureaucrats to protect the rights of disabled individuals. Hundreds of people seized government buildings and refused to leave until action was taken. To this day, it remains the longest occupation of a government building in American history. The biopic shows the human side of the movement, bringing to life the people who came together to change the lives of millions of individuals with disabilities. Being Heumann also stars Dylan O’Brien, Madeline Delp, Rob Delaney, Ray Fisher, and Jon Beavers. The film will be available to stream on Apple TV on November 13, but ScreenRant readers have the opportunity to see the film early and on the big screen.
