John Leguizamo Eyes ‘Odyssey’ Reunion With Matt Damon On Secret Daniels Project At Universal

EXCLUSIVE: After receiving some of the best reviews of his career on The Odyssey, John Leguizamo is ready for his next voyage with Matt Damon as sources tell Deadline that Leguizamo is in negotiations to join Damon in the untitled event project from filmmaking duo Daniels. Daniels, aka Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, are writing and directing. Sandra Oh, Sean Kaufman, Michael Gandolfini and Charles Melton are also in the cast. Universal had no comment on the casting. Details on the project remain under wraps. Kwan, Scheinert and Jonathan Wang will produce through their company Playgrounds’ overall deal with Universal. Kwan and Wang recently produced The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist from Universal’s specialty studio Focus Features. It bowed in March. Watch on Deadline Executive VP Production Development Sara Scott and Director of Production Development Jacqueline Garell will oversee the Daniels’ new project for Universal. The timing couldn’t be more perfect, as the filmmakers were looking for a last critical role in their new film just as The Odyssey was blowing away audiences around the world. Leguizamo’s scene-stealing performance was all it took to get the Daniels’ sign-off and an offer to fill the last major role in the film, which starts shooting later this year. Leguizamo and Universal look to continue their run of hits; he also recently shot Universal’s upcoming Exorcist movie starring Scarlett Johansson. He also can be seen next in Bullet Catch. He is repped by UTA, Mosaic and Jackoway Austen Terman.
