Jio Platforms IPO enters Day 3 as the Rs 30,213-crore initial public offering (IPO) of Jio Platforms closes on Friday, October 23, with the issue attracting strong investor interest and the grey market signalling a potential listing gain of more than 20%.But with the offer seeking a valuation of over Rs 10 lakh crore, should investors apply on the final day, and how much profit could retail investors actually make if the shares list at the premium indicated by the grey market? The latest available subscription data showed that the Jio Platforms IPO was subscribed 5.40 times by the end of the second day on October 22. Qualified institutional buyers (QIBs), excluding anchor investors, subscribed to their portion 12.87 times, while the non-institutional investor (NII) category was subscribed 5.67 times. The retail portion was subscribed 1.55 times. The grey market premium (GMP) stood at Rs 240 per share as of 7:37 am on October 23, according to the latest data provided. At the upper price band of Rs 1,119, this implies an estimated listing price of Rs 1,359, representing a potential gain of 21.45%. However, GMP is an unofficial indicator of market sentiment and does not guarantee the price at which Jio Platforms shares will list. Investors applying on the final day should weigh the potential listing gains against the company's valuation, growth prospects and risks.JIO PLATFORMS IPO GMP TODAYThe Jio Platforms IPO GMP of Rs 240 indicates that shares are being quoted at a premium of Rs 240 over the upper issue price in the unofficial grey market. Based on the price band of Rs 1,065 to Rs 1,119, the implied listing price at the upper end is Rs 1,359. This translates into a potential listing gain of around 21.45% for investors allotted shares at Rs 1,119. The premium also suggests that market participants are anticipating demand for the stock when it begins trading on the exchanges. However, the grey market is not an official exchange and its prices can change before listing. The estimated listing price is therefore not a forecast or a guaranteed return. Actual gains will depend on the listing price, market conditions and the price at which an investor eventually sells the shares. The subscription figures also show a difference in demand across investor categories. While institutional and non-institutional demand was strong by the end of Day 2, the retail category had been subscribed 1.55 times. These figures are not the final subscription numbers, as bidding remains open until the close of the issue on Friday.HOW MUCH CAN RETAIL INVESTORS EARN IF JIO LISTS AT A 20% PREMIUM?The Jio Platforms IPO has a lot size of 12 shares. At the upper price band of Rs 1,119, a retail investor needs Rs 13,428 to apply for one lot.If the stock lists at a 20% premium to the issue price, the estimated listing price would be Rs 1,342.80 per share. That would translate into a gross gain of Rs 223.80 per share, or Rs 2,685.60 for one lot of 12 shares. Here is how the potential profit would change depending on the number of lots allotted, assuming a 20% listing gain. For one lot of 12 shares, an investor would put in Rs 13,428 and make a gross profit of about Rs 2,686 if the shares list at a 20% premium. For three lots, or 36 shares, the investment would be Rs 40,284. At the same listing premium, the gross profit would be around Rs 8,057.For five lots, or 60 shares, the investment would be Rs 67,140. A 20% listing gain would translate into a gross profit of Rs 13,428.For 10 lots, or 120 shares, the investment would be Rs 1,34,280. If the shares list 20% above the issue price, the gross profit would be around Rs 26,856.These are illustrative calculations, not assured returns. They assume that all the shares applied for are allotted and can be sold at exactly 20% above the issue price. The figures exclude brokerage, other applicable charges and taxes.WHAT IF THE CURRENT GMP OF RS 240 HOLDS?At the latest reported GMP of Rs 240, the implied listing price is Rs 1,359, or Rs 240 above the upper issue price of Rs 1,119. If this premium holds until listing and the stock lists at the implied price, the gross gain would be Rs 2,880 for one lot of 12 shares. For three lots, the potential gross gain would be Rs 8,640. For five lots, it would be Rs 14,400, while 10 lots would yield a gross gain of Rs 28,800.This is slightly higher than the profit calculated at a 20% listing premium because the latest GMP indicates a potential gain of 21.45%. However, neither outcome is certain, and the actual listing price could be lower or higher than the grey market estimate.SHOULD YOU SUBSCRIBE TO JIO PLATFORMS IPO ON THE LAST DAY?Brokerages have recommended subscribing to the issue, although their recommendations focus on different investment horizons.Motilal Oswal Wealth Management has recommended subscribing for both listing gains and the long term. It cited Jio's market leadership, earnings growth, improving average revenue per user (ARPU), and opportunities in broadband, enterprise technology and artificial intelligence (AI).Geojit Investments has also recommended subscribing for investors with a medium- to long-term investment horizon. Its report said the company's market position, cash flow generation and opportunities beyond telecom support the investment case, while warning that the near-term upside could be moderated by its premium valuation.Religare Broking has assigned a 'Subscribe - Long Term' rating, citing Jio's subscriber base, growing data consumption, 5G adoption and opportunities across digital services. These recommendations are not a guarantee of listing gains. Investors should also consider whether they are applying for a short-term listing trade or intend to hold the shares for several years.JIO PLATFORMS IPO VALUATION: WHAT SHOULD INVESTORS WATCH?At the upper price band of Rs 1,119, Jio Platforms is valued at about Rs 10.30 lakh crore after the issue. Motilal Oswal's report puts its price-to-earnings multiple at around 34.3 times FY26 earnings on a post-issue basis, compared with about 40.7 times for Bharti Airtel.Jio's financial performance has improved over the past two years. Revenue from operations increased from Rs 1,09,558 crore in FY24 to Rs 1,46,885 crore in FY26. Profit after tax rose from Rs 21,423 crore to Rs 30,049 crore over the same period. The company also reported an average revenue per user of Rs 215.6 per month in the June 2026 quarter, while monthly data consumption per customer reached 43.7 GB. Rising data usage, tariff increases and the expansion of fixed broadband could support future revenue growth. However, connectivity remains the main earnings driver. The extent to which Jio can turn its investments in AI, cloud, enterprise services and other digital offerings into additional profits remains an important factor for long-term investors.Other risks include regulatory changes relating to telecom licences and spectrum, continued capital expenditure on network infrastructure, competition and dependence on Reliance Jio Infocomm, its main operating subsidiary. The IPO is entirely a fresh issue of 27 crore shares, with no offer for sale. Of the proceeds, up to Rs 27,500 crore will be used to repay certain borrowings of Reliance Jio Infocomm, while the balance will go towards general corporate purposes. The Jio Platforms IPO combines strong subscription demand, an encouraging grey market premium and a business with a large subscriber base and opportunities in 5G, broadband and digital services. But the potential listing gain suggested by the GMP should not be treated as a certainty.Investors looking for a quick listing profit should remember that the premium can narrow or disappear before trading begins. Those considering a longer holding period should focus on earnings growth, future monetisation of digital services, valuation and the company's ability to sustain its financial performance. The final-day decision should therefore depend on an investor's risk appetite and investment horizon, rather than the GMP alone. Investors should also check the latest subscription figures before the issue closes, as the available figures cited above are from the end of Day 2.(Disclaimer: The views, opinions, recommendations, and suggestions expressed by experts/brokerages in this article are their own and do not reflect the views of the India Today Group.
