A 78-year-old is having lunch in her kitchen when she is brutally murdered. In what seems to have been a meticulously planned attack, the killer walks through an unlocked door and into the sanctity of her well-ordered home.In under two minutes the five-foot-nothing septuagenarian is struck 21 times with a hammer. Death comes quickly, the one small mercy in this orgy of unprovoked violence. For 24 hours her body lies on the floor in a widening pool of blood. And some people find this funny. This week an influencer who calls himself Danny Lambo posted a video mocking the murder of former MP and Reform UK spokeswoman Ann Widdecombe. On a murder-mystery set at a hotel in Kent, he filmed the dummy body of an elderly woman lying on the ground and posted a caption online asking: ‘Who killed Ann?’, as if her death were a larky joke, a game, a snickering bit of fun, something undeserving of respect or sympathy. The same casual, unthinking attitude was displayed by Green leader Zack Polanski, who has refused to apologise to Nigel Farage for re-posting a photo of a man wearing a T-shirt with an image of a guillotine and the slogan ‘We’re only making plans for Nigel’.An incitement to execute a political leader days after what might well turn out to be the targeted murder of one of his political supporters? You would think – hope! – that Polanski would be falling over his Camper shoes to say sorry, but not a bit of it. On BBC Newsnight this week he refused three times to apologise for his ‘inadvertent mistake’, arguing that he didn’t actually mean to post the image, therefore it didn’t actually matter.Listen Zack, darling. Your ethical position on this is a joke. If you make an inadvertent mistake and bump into someone in the street, you say sorry, don’t you?And if you are, like Polanski, a former hypnotherapist who promised to make women’s breasts bigger through the power of hypnosis, wouldn’t you also say sorry when said breasts refused to balloon and blossom to order? It is basic manners, at the very least. On this highway of intolerance and hate, the traffic always moves from the Left to the Right, never the other way aroundCan you imagine how the old boob-whisperer would have reacted if, for example, someone had threatened to behead Carla Denyer, the Green MP for Bristol? We’d never hear the end of it.Yet this is part of the invidious progressive groupthink that finds those on the radical Left believing not just in their moral superiority but also that it is somehow acceptable to threaten to kill or maim or smear or silence those on the Right.Denyer herself once refused to share a platform with a UKIP candidate, stating that ‘while the protection of free speech is important, we have to guard against the far-Right taking advantage of it’. That is denying free speech, not protecting it.On this highway of intolerance and hate, the traffic always moves from the Left to the Right, never the other way around. A different set of rules seems to apply on this road to nowhere; another code of behaviour is drawn up which essentially means that bullying Leftists can say anything vile about anyone, so long as the targets of their opprobrium happen to be Right-wing.It means that Peter Tatchell can go on social media and gloat about the murder of Ann Widdecombe, an old woman beaten to death in her own home. It means that Sky’s Adam Boulton can go on air to sneer at the freshly dead former government minister, bizarrely defining her as a spinster, an old maid, a battleaxe, a bruiser and a virgin. It means that thuggish Wes Streeting can threaten to kill Right-wing Dutch politician Geert Wilders, sundry ‘rich tax dodgers’ – and, yes, little old me – by throwing us under trains or shooting us with a gun. An influencer who calls himself Danny Lambo posted a video filming the dummy body of an elderly woman lying on the ground and posted a caption online asking: ‘Who killed Ann?'Streeting has never been censured by the Labour Party for these threatening outbursts, indeed they have barely dented his sleek rise though government ranks to where he is now – Defence Secretary. Lord help us all.Had Wes threatened to kill Barack Obama or shove Polly Toynbee under a train he’d probably be pushing a broom around the Ministry of Mops as we speak. Yet here he is in all his pomp and glory: in charge of British national security, managing the Armed Forces and with 182,000 military personnel armed to the teeth and ready to do his bidding.Don’t send them all around to my house, Wes!The same impulse, the same self-indulgent nihilism and righteousness is also rife amongst those Left-wing protestors who feel they are entitled to disrupt traffic, deface property, throw soup at priceless paintings and commit acts of cultural vandalism in the name of a higher cause. And, yes, laugh at the death of Ann Widdecombe. At the root of it lies a kind of unhinged Leftist belief system whereby opposing political views are no longer treated as disagreements, but as a moral failing that deserves to be mocked and punished. In life and in death, too.£5 a chocolate? That’s a bit rich, even for Meghan Despite her professed love of home cooking, Meghan couldn’t name a single favourite dish that she cooks for her familyQuick, hand me my purse. The Duchess of Sussex has a sale on her website, where a new offering from her range, The Complete As Ever Pantry, is reduced from £258 to £219.A tempting bargain, should you happen to be a pozzy-wallah (look it up!) with several mill in the bank, a cake that’s crying out to be sprinkled with flowers and a spendaholic’s fondness for overpriced herbal teas. The set contains two jars of jam, two jars of honey, one marmalade, three small boxes of teabags, one tin of flower sprinkles, two candles and two ‘spice kits’.The equivalent items would probably cost under fifty quid in Tesco but wouldn’t have the royal cachet, plus fragrant Meghan on hand to seal the deal. To complement the set, the duchess rather grandly suggests also buying a box of her chocolate caramels, £43 for a box of ten.Who are all these lunatics happy to pay nearly £5 for a single chocolate? Perhaps the same ones who tuned in to watch Meghan appear as a guest judge on a recent episode of MasterChef Australia. On set our girl seemed typically thrilled with herself, but is it my imagination or is she getting weirder and weirder?Despite her professed love of home cooking, Meghan couldn’t name a single favourite dish that she cooks for her family. She gushed on about how much she loves herbs but then – holy basil! – couldn’t name one of them either. She burbled to contestants that her mother Doria was a wonderful cook, but despite this expertise Meghan had taught herself to cook because God forbid anyone should take a julienne of credit for any of her achievements. Then, in another crazy pivot, she insisted she had grown up on home-cooked meals and glorious Californian produce, despite previously claiming to be a latchkey kid who survived on microwavable food, TV dinners and eating at chain restaurants such as Taco Bell and the salad bar at Sizzlers.Sometimes the truth is as wispy and elusive as the smoke from a signature As Ever candle, £64, enriched with sandalwood and neroli, complete with top notes of desperation.Carly Simon reveals that she has been living with Parkinson’s disease and has also undergone surgery for a basal cell carcinoma on her face.‘It is difficult, frustrating, and sometimes frightening,’ she said in a statement, which she hoped explained her long absence from public life.‘It is not simply sadness or laziness – it is as though the part of the brain that sends out invitations to participate in life has temporarily misplaced the guest list. But I have not stopped living, and I have not stopped working.’Indeed. The woman who sang the best Bond theme of all time – Nobody Does It Better, from The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) – along with perhaps the best romcom opening credits theme of all time – Let The River Run, from Working Girl (1989) – releases a new album next month.‘I am still very much here,’ said 83-year-old Carly, who remains a class act in personally challenging times: dignified, courageous and inspiring.Nicole does the full Liz Taylor This week Nicole was pictured at the Hotel Splendido in Portofino, where she is spending a healing summer in five-star, drop-dead Italian luxuryNicole Kidman never did raise her arms in jubilation after her 2001 divorce from Tom Cruise. The actress has said the famous photograph was an urban myth: not a paparazzi shot, as is widely believed, but a scene from an unnamed film.Sadly, there has been another urban myth in her life – this year she divorced her second husband Keith Urban after 19 years of marriage. And this week Nicole was pictured at the Hotel Splendido in Portofino, where she is spending a healing summer in five-star, drop-dead Italian luxury. That would be enough to make any woman throw her arms in the air with joy. It was at the Splendido where Richard Burton proposed to Elizabeth Taylor. In fact, Liz loved it so much she spent four of her honeymoons there. No wonder Nicole is smiling.Mitch Winehouse may be a bereaved father but, in the 15 years since his daughter Amy died, it has not always been easy to feel sympathy for him.In the High Court earlier this year, he lost his case against two of Amy’s friends, who had auctioned dozens of her clothes and other possessions. The late singer’s former stylist Naomi Parry and her friend Catriona Gourlay were this week awarded their legal costs after the judge threw out Mr Winehouse’s claim. Mitch Winehouse may be a bereaved father but, in the 15 years since his daughter Amy died, it has not always been easy to feel sympathy for himHe had argued they had acted dishonestly and did not own the tragic little dresses, ballet shoes, perfumes and mementoes of a life cut short. The judge begged to differ, and this week ordered him to pay the two women £950,000.You have to wonder what motive propelled him to take such a mean course of action in the first place. Naomi and Catriona were dear friends of Amy’s, who had held onto the items for many years after her death. One of them wanted the money to pay for a course of IVF.They didn’t even make much from the sale. Didn’t it cross her father’s mind that Amy, always generous to her pals, would have wanted her friends to have the money?Be prepared... to be mollycoddled Famously, the Guide motto is ‘Be Prepared’. Be Prepared to be mollycoddled, perhapsGirlguiding (formerly The Girl Guides Association) has unveiled its first major uniform redesign since 1990.As a former Brownie Elf and Girl Guide White Heather Patrol member, I can’t say I approve of the scruffy new look. Brownies are now in T-shirts and yellow baseball caps, while Guides are in T-shirts with blue bucket hats. The uniforms are designed to be more affordable, informal, flexible and to put the focus on confidence and self-expression – meaning the girls can wear what the hell they want with the new tops. ‘Our old uniforms had collars, it got uncomfortable around the neck,’ said one Guide this week. Holy campfires! If she thinks a cotton collar is difficult, how is she going to cope with the rough stuff of life in the years ahead?Famously, the Guide motto is ‘Be Prepared’. Be Prepared to be mollycoddled, perhaps. Listen, whippersnappers. Our uniforms were a blizzard of collars and ties, badges and lanyards, pins and belts. It wasn’t always comfortable. But at least we were smart.
