Jamie Carragher caught in bizarre ‘fake news’ row with Boris Becker after tennis icon’s backhanded compliment backfires

The post claimed Carragher had slammed VAR after failing to intervene when Arsenal star Gabriel kicked Emiliano Martinez in the head during their clash on Sunday. Becker quoted the post, adding the sarcastic message: “For once, good point from Jamie…” But Carragher responded shortly after to reveal that he had never said the quotes at all, and that Becker had fallen for a hoax. He even returned a playful jab as he replied: “I’ll have to disappoint you Boris, it’s a fake quote! Hopefully this week in the CL I can make the good point you’re waiting for.” It is safe to say Becker’s attempt at getting one over on the former Liverpool star backfired spectacularly. The original false quote, which Becker appears to agree with, involved the lack of referee intervention after the controversial incident in the first half of the heavyweight Prem contest at the Emirates. Pundits Wayne Rooney and Ashley Young both felt the Brazilian was lucky to escape a red card for the incident. Is that football? “Was the referee waiting for the goalkeeper to start bleeding before recognising that a foul had taken place? “Inconsistent and poor officiating is creating controversy in almost every Premier League match, and far too little has been done to address it. It is deeply frustrating when reckless challenges repeatedly go unpunished and certain clubs appear to benefit from those decisions.” Carragher also commented directly on the post to inform viewers that the comments were not real, but his response is just a drop in the ocean combatting recent trends of falsifying punditry quotes to drive engagement.
