There is a strange silence around Jailer 2. Not complete silence, of course. A Rajinikanth film cannot arrive quietly, especially one following a blockbuster like Jailer (2023). The trailer has generated discussion, Mohanlal and Shivarajkumar's return has excited fans, and the possible Hrithik Roshan cameo has given social media something to investigate. But compare that with January 2025, when the sequel was announced. The teaser was treated almost like a festival. Special screenings were organised across India, fans celebrated Tiger Muthuvel Pandian's return, and social media was filled with predictions about how big the sequel could become.Since then, the excitement appears to have thinned out, despite the film having almost every ingredient needed for a blockbuster. Rajinikanth, Nelson and Anirudh are back. Vidya Balan, SJ Suryah and Mithun Chakraborty have joined the cast, alongside returning stars Mohanlal and Shivarajkumar. So what happened to the hype? The musical madness is missing It is easy to forget Rajinikanth's position when Jailer arrived. His previous releases, Darbar (2020) and Annaatthe (2021), had underperformed, while Nelson was coming off an underwhelming response to Thalapthy Vijay's Beast (2022). Both had something to prove. Rajinikanth's stardom could guarantee an opening, but the film needed something more to become a phenomenon. Anirudh Ravichander's music provided that.Kaavaalaa became a cultural moment, while Hukum turned into an anthem for Rajinikanth and Muthuvel Pandian. The promotional videos, music videos and background score kept the film in public conversation well before release. The music was doing much of the promotional work. That is precisely why the response to Jailer 2's album matters. Its 12-track album arrived on October 2, but instead of becoming a promotional engine, the music has largely invited comparisons with its predecessor. Ala Bolelo generated conversation, although its Malayalam portions attracted criticism. Bindaas, despite featuring Nora Fatehi, has struggled to create comparable momentum. Several compositions lack the punch expected from Anirudh, while listeners have pointed to similarities with his recent work. One Name and One Sun One Moon have their appeal, but neither has caught fire like Kaavaalaa or Hukum. Meanwhile, Hukum Reloaded makes comparisons with the original inevitable. The problem is not simply whether the songs are good. Jailer's music helped create anticipation beyond Rajinikanth's existing audience. Its sequel has yet to produce a defining musical moment capable of doing the same. Bigger isn’t always betterThe first Jailer understood something sequels often lose: the pleasure of discovery. Muthuvel Pandian was introduced as a retired man, husband and father before Tiger emerged. That contrast gave the character his power, while the family dynamics, humour and storytelling made his transformation more effective. Even the cameos followed this approach. Mohanlal and Shivarajkumar arrived after the film had established its world, making their appearances feel like events within the story rather than promotional attractions.Jailer 2 appears to have reversed that equation. Its expanded cast has become central to the campaign, with Hrithik Roshan's reported appearance emerging as the major talking point of the trailer rather than its content or Muthuvel Pandian himself. Viewers have been trying to identify him from a brief silhouette, while criticism of the visual effects and comparisons with Breaking Bad have further shaped the online conversation. Much of the discussion is therefore about who is in the film and what their roles might be, rather than what Tiger's next chapter holds. That shift matters because Jailer never sold scale as its primary attraction. It sold Rajinikanth in a different space, with Nelson allowing him to embrace his age and play a character whose power came from the contrast between his ordinary appearance and his violent past. Jailer 2 is clearly bigger, with an expanded criminal world, a larger ensemble and more elaborate action. But bigger does not automatically mean more exciting. The growing focus on cameos also comes at an interesting time. Aamir Khan's much-publicised appearance in Coolie generated enormous expectations, only for the eventual cameo to divide audiences. It showed how casting announcements can sometimes create anticipation that the film itself struggles to match. For Jailer 2, the risk is similar. The sequel may be expanding its universe and scale while giving audiences less to discover. The cameos should be the cherry on top. If they become the main attraction, it exposes how little the promotional material has to offer beyond the cast.Remember the frenzy around Coolie?Consider how Lokesh Kanagaraj promoted Coolie. Rajinikanth's presence, Nagarjuna's character reveal, Anirudh's music and virtually every casting announcement became talking points. Jailer 2 has comparable attractions, yet its campaign appears to have generated fewer moments that have travelled beyond its core fan audience. Could that be deliberate?Coolie arrived carrying enormous expectations, and its promotional frenzy eventually became part of the pressure surrounding its reception. Following Coolie, War 2 (2025), Toxic (2026) and The Paradise (2026), there is perhaps a case for avoiding another campaign that builds expectations beyond what a film can realistically deliver. Interestingly, Jailer 2 has skipped the traditional grand audio launch. Instead, Rajinikanth's three-hour television interview on October 11 is among its final major promotional events. Whether this quieter approach is intentional or simply how the campaign has unfolded remains unclear. But the difference is noticeable. The original Jailer succeeded because Rajinikanth's screen presence, Nelson's storytelling, Anirudh's music, humour, family dynamics and action worked together. The cameos were the cherry on top. Jailer 2 has the cast, scale and spectacle. What it has not produced yet is that one defining moment that makes audiences desperate to discover what Nelson has created. That could change on October 15. After all, Jailer became a phenomenon inside theatres, where audiences discovered Tiger and its biggest surprises together. Perhaps Jailer 2 needs the same opportunity. Its relatively restrained campaign could even work in its favour, provided the film delivers something worth discovering.- Ends
