Jailer 2 crosses Rs 710 crore but has it topped 2.0 as biggest Tamil hit? Explained

Superstar Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 is racing towards another major box office milestone, with its worldwide gross crossing Rs 710 crore within 11 days of release. The Nelson Dilipkumar directorial has established itself as one of Tamil cinema’s biggest commercial successes, but a larger question now dominates the box office conversation: has it surpassed 2.0 to become Kollywood’s all-time highest-grossing film? For years, 2.0, starring Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar and directed by Shankar, has been widely reported to have grossed around Rs 800 crore worldwide. However, the absence of an official confirmation from the makers has left room for debate over its actual lifetime collection. With Jailer 2 continuing its theatrical run, the uncertainty surrounding 2.0’s final figures has become central to the discussion about which film holds the record.Speaking exclusively to India Today Digital, trade analyst Ramesh Bala said the reported worldwide total for 2.0 should be viewed with caution, given the lack of officially confirmed numbers.“So far, it was widely reported that 2.0 made around Rs 800 crore. But, the problem is that the official numbers are known only to the producers, who haven't made any announcement. So, a section of people say that its run ended just below Rs 800 crore, while some say that it hasn't even made Rs 700 crore,” he said. Jailer 2 vs 2.0: Why the record remains disputedThe uncertainty surrounding 2.0’s box office performance makes it difficult to establish a definitive benchmark for Jailer 2. While the former is widely associated with a worldwide gross of around Rs 800 crore, differing estimates have circulated over the years, with some trade observers questioning whether it even crossed the Rs 700-crore mark.Bala explained that the reported figure could be a rounded-off estimate rather than a total backed by verifiable market-level data. He also highlighted the difficulty of obtaining reliable figures from several international territories, where comprehensive lifetime collection data is not consistently available. “Whatever it is, Jailer 2 becoming the top industry hit is inevitable. In trade circles, the Rs 800 crore seems like a rounded-off figure. The lifetime collection numbers from Sri Lanka, Europe and other areas do not provide numbers. Only markets like North America, Australia and New Zealand provide actual numbers. If the actual collection of 2.0 is below Rs 700 crore, then Jailer 2 has already crossed the mark; if not, Jailer 2 is right on track to become the all-time grosser of Kollywood,” he said. The distinction is crucial. Jailer 2’s current worldwide gross is based on reported estimates, while its position relative to 2.0 depends on which lifetime figure for the 2018 science-fiction film is accepted. Until more definitive figures emerge, the exact ranking remains open to debate.Jailer 2 maintains momentum in its second weekThe film's second-week performance has strengthened expectations that it could emerge as Tamil cinema's biggest commercial hit. After collecting Rs 334.35 crore nett in India during its opening week, Jailer 2 recorded Rs 64.35 crore nett over its second weekend. On Sunday, October 25, the film earned Rs 25.70 crore nett in India, taking its domestic net collection to Rs 398.70 crore. Its India gross stood at Rs 466.85 crore, while the reported overseas gross reached Rs 243.50 crore. Together, these figures took its worldwide gross to Rs 710.35 crore.Bala also pointed to the film's ticket sales on Monday as a sign that audience interest has not dropped off sharply in its second week.“That's a trend that is positive for a film in its second week. There are still two weeks left for Diwali and with no big releases until then, it's an easy feat to cross the Rs 800 crore before Diwali,” he said, referring to the film selling around 7,000 tickets in an hour on Monday. The continued demand, combined with a relatively open release calendar in the coming weeks, could give Jailer 2 room to build on its existing collections. Its weekday performance will be crucial in determining how quickly it approaches the next milestone, particularly as the Diwali release window draws closer. Can Jailer 2 claim Kollywood's box office crown? For now, Jailer 2 has a strong case for becoming Tamil cinema's biggest hit, but the lack of definitive lifetime figures for 2.0 complicates any claim that the record has already been broken. Bala's assessment suggests that the sequel could settle the debate through its continued theatrical run, rather than relying on comparisons with disputed historical estimates. With audience interest holding into the second week and more days available to add to its total before Diwali, Jailer 2 is firmly in the race for the crown. Whether it has already overtaken 2.0 remains uncertain, but Rajinikanth's latest outing is increasingly positioning itself as the film to beat in Kollywood's box office history.- Ends
