Rajinikanth's Jailer 2 is chasing two massive box-office milestones: beating Coolie's Rs 151 crore worldwide opening and taking Tamil cinema closer to the elusive Rs 1,000 crore club. With advance bookings reportedly touching Rs 60 crore ahead of release, the Nelson Dilipkumar directorial is poised for a big debut. However, a slow start in the Telugu states and the lack of a multiplex release in the Hindi market could stand in the way of a record-breaking opening.Trade analyst Ramesh Bala, speaking to India Today Digital, predicted a Rs 125 crore worldwide opening, with the possibility of going higher if ticket sales gather momentum. With one more day to go before the film's release, the advance sales are already pointing towards a strong opening.“With one more day to go, Jailer 2 seems to have raked in Rs 60 crore in pre-sales, with approximately Rs 35 crore in India and Rs 25 crore in the overseas belt. Before the first show begins, the advance booking for Jailer 2 will stand at around Rs 70-75 crore. If we include walk-ins, it might add up to Rs 50 crore,” Bala said.He added, “Jailer 2 could open Rs 125 crore for sure.” The film's opening-day prospects have naturally invited comparisons with Rajinikanth's previous release, Coolie, which reportedly opened at Rs 151 crore worldwide. Surpassing that figure would put Jailer 2 in contention for one of the biggest opening days in Indian cinema. Can Jailer 2 beat Coolie's opening-day record?According to Bala, the film's ability to surpass Coolie's opening will depend largely on how its advance bookings perform in the Telugu states and the Hindi market. At present, ticket sales are progressing at a fast pace in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka. However, the Telugu states have not witnessed the same momentum in advance bookings, according to the trade analyst. The Hindi market presents a bigger challenge. Jailer 2 is not getting a multiplex release in the North Indian market because of its four-week OTT window. Multiplexes have been insisting on an eight-week gap between a film's theatrical release and its streaming debut, limiting the theatrical reach of films that do not adhere to the window. As a result, Jailer 2 is expected to rely on single-screen theatres in the Hindi market, restricting its potential to attract a wider audience in the region.Bala said the absence of a multiplex release would limit the film's chances of setting a new opening-day record. However, he believes a turnaround in the Telugu states could change the picture. “If the Telugu sales pick up, the film is likely to rake in Rs 150 crore and beat Coolie's record,” he said. Can Jailer 2 take Tamil cinema into the Rs 1,000 crore club?Beyond the opening-day numbers, Jailer 2 also arrives with another major box office question hanging over it: Can a Tamil film finally enter the Rs 1,000 crore worldwide club? The rise of pan-India cinema has seen films from several industries attract audiences across linguistic markets. Yet, the Rs 1,000 crore milestone remains an elusive target for Tamil cinema.Shankar's 2.0, starring Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar, earned around Rs 800 crore worldwide, while Nelson's Jailer and Lokesh Kanagaraj's Leo, starring Vijay, each collected around Rs 600 crore worldwide. Despite their strong performances, the films did not achieve the kind of sustained traction in the Hindi-speaking market that could have pushed their worldwide total closer to the Rs 1,000 crore mark. For Bala, the key to reaching that milestone is expanding beyond the core Tamil audience and performing strongly in the North Indian market.“Jailer 2 will have a great opening. In Tamil cinema, Vijay and Rajinikanth are in that range to score a Rs 1,000 crore hit. Sun Pictures should have gone for an eight-week deal, at least for the Hindi version. Without that and no multiplex release in the North, the Rs 1,000 crore dream will remain a dream,” he said. The four-week OTT window, therefore, could become a crucial factor in determining how far Jailer 2 can go at the box office. Even if the film opens to impressive numbers in its home markets and overseas, a restricted Hindi theatrical release could limit its worldwide earnings. Can word of mouth change the game?Despite the hurdles, Bala believes the film's reception could alter its box office trajectory after release. He pointed to the first Jailer, which gained momentum after its initial shows, as an example of how audience response can drive a film's theatrical performance.“Now, everything lies by word of mouth. For Jailer, it picked up from the second show. If the same happens for Jailer 2, the multiplexes might make an exception and release it in their halls,” Bala said. A strong audience response could potentially persuade multiplexes to reconsider their position, opening up an additional revenue stream for the sequel. However, that remains a possibility rather than a certainty.Jailer 2: First-day show timingsThe film is scheduled to begin its first shows at 4.30 am in overseas markets. In India, screenings will commence at 6 am in Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Telangana and Karnataka, while the first shows in Tamil Nadu will begin at 8.30 am.With substantial advance sales, strong expectations surrounding Rajinikanth's return as Muthuvel Pandian and the success of the first film working in its favour, Jailer 2 is poised for a major opening. Whether it can surpass Coolie's Rs 151 crore debut or make a serious push towards the Rs 1,000 crore worldwide milestone will depend on its performance in the Telugu states, the reach of its Hindi release and, ultimately, the word of mouth.- Ends
