Jailed pop star Gary Glitter appears in court on historic sex offence charges including assaults on girl under age of 14

POP star Gary Glitter has appeared in court on historic sex offence charges including three counts of indecent assault on a girl under 14. Prosecutor Jonathan Polnay KC said the alleged offences occurred between 1978 and 1981, when the complainant, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, was aged eight to 11. Prosecutors allege Glitter would give the girl chocolate and “invite her into his house where he then committed a number of serious sexual offences.” He appeared at the court via videolink wearing a blue shirt, glasses and a cap. After being asked to confirm his name, Glitter said: “Your honour, excuse me, I’m extremely deaf and unless I’m lip-reading I can’t hear. Most read in The Sun “My name is Paul Gadd.” Glitter added: “Sorry, your honour, may I make a suggestion? “If the barrister turns the volume down a little bit, it wouldn’t be so distorting in my hearing aids.” Glitter was charged with one count of unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of 13 last month. He was also charged with three counts of indecent assault on a girl under the age of 14. Glitter was first interviewed on July 22, 2025 in relation to the investigation. The victim is currently being supported by specialist officers. The probe could see the ex-glam rocker — who uses a wheelchair in jail — facing trial again and spending the rest of his life locked up. He is held at category C HMP Channings Wood in Devon. Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring remanded Glitter into custody and he will next appear at the Old Bailey on September 2 – the judge added it was “to be determined” whether this would be via videolink or in person. The judge told Glitter: “You face charges that include an offence which is indictable only, which means only the crown court can deal with it. “The other three charges are related because it’s the same complainant. “In that circumstance, all four charges are sent to crown court, the Central Criminal Court, known as the Old Bailey, where you will appear on September 2.” Glitter’s current term expires in February 2031 when he would be almost 87. Glitter is understood to have denied the accusations. A source previously told The Sun: “Specialist detectives have spoken to Glitter in prison and he has denied the allegations. “But he knows how serious this is and what it could mean for him. “He’s very down and fears never tasting freedom again. “He is pretty much on his last legs in jail and this could finish him off. But his alleged victim wants justice before he dies.” Glitter was first jailed in 1999. The former pop star then got 16 years in 2015 and was released on licence halfway through his sentence in February 2023.
