JACK WILSHERE has told former Manchester United defender Teden Mengi to find a new club before the end of the transfer window. The Luton boss, 34, is preparing to kick off his first full season at the helm with a Carabao Cup trip to Gillingham tomorrow. But with the defender having fallen behind Hakeem Odoffin and new boy George Johnston in the pecking order, Wilshere reckons it would be best if he looked for a new club. Sign up for the Football newsletter Thank you! The ex-Arsenal midfielder said: “I spoke about Teds earlier on in pre-season. “We brought in a centre-back, Hacks [Odoffin] came through last year. We still have Mads [Andersen], we still have Kal [Naismith], who can play there. “So, yeah, while he’s [Mengi] here, of course, he’s training with us and there’s an opportunity for him. “However, I think, and I’ve had these conversation with him as well, that it probably is best if he if he finds something else, but we’ll see on that.” Wilshere went on to add: “I want to remain respectful to Teds because he’s someone I’ve got a massive respect for but, yeah, he knows the situation anyway. He’s training, but looking for something.” Mengi signed for Luton from Man Utd ahead of their 2023-24 Premier League campaign. The central defender is fit and training but has not featured in Luton’s pre-season friendlies. Unlike several of his team-mates, however, he has retained his squad number, avoiding being totally frozen out. Lasse Nordas, Jerry Yates, Reuell Walters and Tom Holmes, on the other hand, have all been left without squad numbers as the Hatters look to move them on. Luton finished last season on an 11-game unbeaten run but agonisingly missed out on a play-off spot on the final day.
