Steam has been sitting on my PC for so long that I barely think about it anymore. It's one of the few rare apps on my PC that earns its startup privileges, after all. Every now and then, though, I stumble across something buried in its settings that makes me wonder how Valve managed to hide such an obviously useful feature in the first place. Beneath the storefront, library, and familiar game launcher, there's an entire layer of power-user functionality in Steam that most users will probably never encounter. Some of it can save you hours, some of it can fix annoying problems, and some of its features genuinely change how you manage your games, but a common string underlining them all is that Valve is terrible at letting you know these features exist. Steam has been compiling your shaders for years Most players probably have no idea Steam's shader pre-caching sounds like something invented by a graphics engineer who assumed gamers enjoy reading API documentation. In reality, it is pretty simple: Steam can download and prepare shader data ahead of time, helping supported OpenGL and Vulkan games avoid stutter when shaders are compiled during gameplay. Shaders are invisible pieces of PC gaming that only become interesting when something goes wrong. A game can run at a respectable frame rate and still hitch when you enter a new area or trigger an effect your GPU has not prepared for. Pre-caching lets Steam do that work before you start playing. This feature is particularly useful for Linux and SteamOS users, where Vulkan is commonplace, but Windows gamers do benefit from supported Vulkan and OpenGL titles too. It can also matter after you change a GPU or download new drivers, when cached shader data needs rebuilding. It's baffling how Steam has offered this for years, yet I suspect most players have never knowingly interacted with it. Valve added shader pre-caching all the way back in 2017, and then proceeded to tuck the controls into Steam's settings, largely leaving it alone. How to enable shader pre-caching in Steam There are plenty of clicks involved, but they're worth it To enable shader pre-caching in Steam, open up the launcher and click on Settings from the top-left corner. Click on the Downloads menu, and scroll all the way down to find the Shader Pre-Caching category. Here, enable both options saying Enable Shader Pre-caching and Allow background processing of Vulkan shaders. The former option lets Steam download pre-compiled shader data for supported games. This then reduces the amount of shader compilation your PC needs to handle while you play. The latter, on the other hand, goes a step further, letting Steam process those shaders quietly while you are doing other things, rather than making your next gaming session pay the bill. There are more settings than you know what to do with Steam's notification system is pretty useful, right up until three friends decide to launch games at the same time. That little pop-up telling me someone has started playing a new game becomes genuinely irritating when I'm benchmarking hardware, testing mods, or simply trying to concentrate. In fact, when other friends are clearly trying mods that are making their game crash, seeing them boot up a game ten times in five minutes is surprisingly difficult to look at. Thankfully, Steam lets me disable these friend activity notifications entirely, without having to pretend I don't know anyone. Head into Steam Settings and select Notifications. Here, uncheck the option that says When a friend joins a game. Dynamic Collections is a fantastic feature for users with hundreds of games in their Steam library. Another feature I've come to appreciate is Dynamic Collections. I can have Steam automatically collect every game I have installed into one place, meaning I don't need to wade through an increasingly ridiculous library looking for something that is already sitting on my SSD. It may sound trivial, sure, but not for users who have hundreds of games in their Steam library. Just head into your library, and click on the Your Collections button next to the search bar. Here, select Create a New Collection, and pick Create Dynamic Collection after giving it a name. Here, check any feature you want as the filter that every new game goes through before automatically entering your new dynamic collection. You can combine multiple filters to fine-tune a Dynamic Collection, ranging from player count and play state to hardware support, features, language, and genre. There's also my personal favorite: Steam's ability to treat different displays differently. I can configure Big Picture Mode to launch specifically on my television instead of hijacking the monitor I am working on. When I boot up Steam on my PC, it launches in its regular mode, while the Big Picture Mode remains reserved for the big screen. To set a specific screen to use Big Picture Mode exclusively, boot up Steam and turn on Big Picture Mode. From here, go to Settings > Display, and select the preferred display for Big Picture Mode. Steam Steam is the platform that made PC gaming popular, hosting thousands of games from all sorts of publishers. It's where PC gamers can play games, share achievements, meet new people, and become a part of its various communities. Steam is still hiding in plain sight None of these Steam features feel like they should be particularly different to discover. It's software I've used for years, and yet, it still manages to surprise me with settings that feel like they were designed specifically for the way I use my PC. That says more about Steam's interface than it does about how obscure these features actually are. Valve has spent years turning Steam into far more than a storefront with a library attached to it. The problem is that it rarely stops to tell anyone about the little touches that make the whole experience better. Maybe that is part of Steam's charm, but I would certainly appreciate a little less treasure hunting the next time Valve quietly adds something genuinely useful.
