It’s time for Trump to work a shift at the Cheesecake Factory

Former President Barack Obama took to the campaign trail over the weekend to rejuvenate Democratic voters and take aim at President Donald Trump. He offered a snarky remark about Trump’s renovations to the White House that, like many of the criticisms Obama makes, didn’t really make any sense. The 44th president blasted Trump for installing gilded architectural modifications and decorations, making a senseless comment connecting Saddam Hussein and the Cheesecake Factory. As humorless as it actually was, it does present the president with a wonderful opportunity: Trump should work a shift at Cheesecake Factory.“What’s with the gold?” said Obama. “He’s got the White House looking like Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory.” I get that this was supposed to be funny, and many in the crowd during Obama’s speech did indeed laugh. Additionally, many of Trump’s rivals, opponents, and critics also claimed to find it amusing. And while humor is indeed subjective, it is safe to say that the former president’s quip didn’t make much sense.First, Saddam has been dead since 2006. Second, I’m not sure which Cheesecake Factory Obama has ever been to, but there aren’t any gold displays throughout the restaurant. The restaurant’s decor typically features a Mediterranean aesthetic and Egyptian columns. Neither of those is gold or connected to Hussein, but I digress. It was one of those attempted insults that sound better than they actually are.In typical Trump administration fashion, officials were quick to capitalize on Obama’s attempted slight. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent dined at the Cheesecake Factory on Monday, mocking Obama in an interview after exiting the restaurant. Bessent also said he found Obama’s joke about aesthetics odd, given the widely panned, hideous design of his presidential library, which he called “Darth Vader’s tomb.” Also, the White House social media team used the Cheesecake Factory’s famously large menu to highlight Trump’s list of accomplishments as president.Trump himself also responded to Obama’s comments, calling his predecessor a “lousy president” and a “stupid person.” But he should now take it one step further and channel his much-revered, adored, and brilliant political stunt from the 2024 presidential campaign, updating it with a Cheesecake Factory twist — it’s time for Trump to work a shift at the Cheesecake Factory. It would essentially be a sequel to his shift at a McDonald’s in suburban Philadelphia in October 2024 and to his time driving a garbage truck. Democrats regularly give Republicans opportunities by showing how elitist they are, and Obama’s attempted diss by disparaging the Cheesecake Factory is just the latest example of that. So why not make Obama eat his words and serve them with a delicious piece of cheesecake from the restaurant? Or, while bringing out a restaurant patron’s order of its famous four-cheese pasta, Trump could also deliver the list of his accomplishments that the White House social media team created.Trump said he wants voters to act as if he is on the ballot again. Well, if he did this, he would effectively be putting himself on the Republican ballot again in the midterm elections. Voters could remember Trump as a Cheesecake Factory server more than they remember the congressional Republicans on the ballot.Consider the possibilities. For example, say a restaurant guest orders the Cheesecake Factory’s Tex-Mex egg rolls. Trump comes out, delivering their food and reminding them that he has stood up to China and implemented strong border security along the Texas-Mexico border.Someone orders the chocolate tuxedo cream cheesecake? After delivering dessert to the patrons, Trump reminds them that tuxedos are worn by the corporate executives who have committed to new investments in the U.S. totaling $11 trillion.A MISSING WIFE, A MURDER CHARGE, AND ANOTHER ICE HOAXAnother person requests a serving of the Cheesecake Factory’s Hershey’s chocolate bar cheesecake. Trump brings the culinary treat along with a reminder that Hershey is in Pennsylvania, a state where the president announced approximately $100 billion in investments in tech, energy, and power infrastructure. And, as a bonus, he mentions how he helped keep U.S. Steel headquartered in Pennsylvania and secure a $2.5 billion investment to modernize its facilities. Moreover, as in 2024, he could do it shortly before the nation goes to the polls. The opportunities are nearly endless, and it would once again be an example of Trump turning the Democrats’ intended insults into political public relations gold. And it could help change the political narrative surrounding the 2026 midterm elections.
