CBS Sheriff Country is taking things in a darker direction as it heads into its second season, which could start a whole new era for the series. Throughout Sheriff Country season 1, viewers got the chance to learn more about Mickey Fox (Morena Baccarin) as she navigated her way through the difficulties of being Edgewater's sheriff. While the inaugural season of the series more than established Edgewater's police force and the interpersonal issues that each character faces, Sheriff Country season 2 started off with a case that laid the groundwork for something even darker in Fire Country's companion series. With Mickey getting the chance to learn more about her mother, Eva Santos (Rachel Ticotin), who she long believed was dead, the springboard of Sheriff Country season 2 already feels like it has a darker edge than the first season. The premiere delved into all the most uncomfortable parts of Eva being alive and present in Edgewater, and made it clear that the show wouldn't be backing off of her story as the season progresses. DEA agent Eva is pursuing an organized crime ring that bubbles up in one of Mickey's cases, pushing her to bring Eva into the fold. While the dynamics between Mickey, her parents, and her daughter are some of the most interesting on Sheriff Country, the layers to the procedural side of the story are what could bring the series into an even darker space. With a story that could build new stakes for everyone, Sheriff Country season 2's premiere unlocked a whole different era. Sheriff Country Introduces A Dark New Story In Season 2 CBS The first episode of Sheriff Country season 2 establishes that Edgewater has been dealing with an underground crime family, the Stoyanovs that's been behind some of the most sinister crimes in recent memory. With Eva coming in to provide some context about what she believes is happening, Mickey connects the dots surrounding the group after investigating the case of Donna, a local girl who becomes entangled in a dangerous relationship that leads her to using a synthetic opioid, Cyclone. When Mickey figures out what's happening, uncovering a larger operation wherein the Stoyanov crime family has been involved in human trafficking. Throughout the episode, the groundwork is laid for one of the most interesting and intense cases Sheriff Country has tackled yet. While the Stoyanovs, a syndicate of the Bulgarian cartel, are all over Edgewater, Mickey having an understanding of what's happening generally puts things in motion for a season-long arc. Donna, who reveals that her ex-boyfriend tried to push her to be trafficked in order to pay off a debt, sets Mickey's gears turning, and by episode's end, viewers get the chance to see someone nearly escape from a remote house, clearly where girls are being held before being trafficked. Sheriff Country's Seasonal Story Could Bring Sky Further Into The Picture CBs While Mickey's investigation and the larger DEA presence in Edgewater will be a huge part of the Stoyanov storyline in Sheriff Country season 2, the darker crime narrative could benefit an unexpected character even more than it fuels the main procedural parts of the show. Throughout the first season of Sheriff Country, the series had a tough time figuring out what to do with Mickey's daughter, Sky (Amanda Acuri). A recovering addict who's struggled with her sobriety, Sky's place throughout Sheriff Country season 1 felt like it wasn't always cemented, with her character fluctuating to wherever the story needed her. The trafficking storyline creates an opportunity to help Sky develop as a character into an independent part of the series, rather than just living in her family's shadow. With Sky in recovery and having a working understanding of how recovering from trauma can feel, it's possible she could become an integral part of the trafficking storyline should there be girls rescued from the Stoyanovs and brought back to Edgewater. Allowing Sky to support others without positioning her in law enforcement could allow her to be a safe space for Sheriff Country to explore some incredibly dark themes throughout the season.
